When Kate Bosworth finally read the script, she went after her agent with a knife

This week at the box office, Tangled and Harry Potter flip flopped, with Tangled taking over Harry Potter‘s number one spot.  (A box office battled immortalized with the AP headline “Hairy vs. Harry,” which is already its own porn parody).  It was a down weekend (11% from last year) of mostly boring movies, with the exception of the Natalie Portman-Mila Kunis lesbian tour de force Black Swan, which kissed and scissored its way to a $77,000 per-screen average in limited release. Girl Power!

The closest thing to an interesting story was Warrior’s Way coming in with $3.05 million from 1,622 locations, which managed to out-suck such sucky sucks as Jonah Hex, Dragonball Evolution, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and Punisher: War Zone.  It’s probably not surprising for a movie that’s been on the shelf for two years and whose most prominent marketing was a 30-second TV spot that featured only the dialog, “Ninjas. Daaaamn.”

For a look at where Warrior’s Way ranks on the 2010 sucky movie depth chart, we go to our favorite nerds at Pajiba for an internet-approved Top 10 List:

REVIEW: YOUTH IN REVOLT

01.14.10 Written by Vince Mancini

Youth in Revolt isn’t a movie about which I can say, “Go see it!  You’ll love it!”  Because, based on word of mouth and a lot of other reviews I’ve read, there’s a good chance you won’t.  I don’t know why.  Maybe it’s because it’s a “small” movie.  It’s not hugely ambitious, but it seeks only to be charming and entertaining, and it succeeds.

What I can tell you is that I loved it.  I went in expecting a high-concept laffer (that’s Variety slanguage for a straightforward comedy with an easily-explained premise) about awkward Michael Cera using his vulgar alter ego, Francois Dillinger to get laid.  Game, set, snatch.  Instead I got this sort of extended, absurdist riff.  It was a pleasant surprise — quirky in the original sense of the word, when it still meant charming and strange, and not obnoxiously twee.  It manages to be offbeat in a way that’s intelligent without feeling smug, and honest without being cringe-inducingly earnest, like so many indie films and your fruity love letters.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: YUTES REVOLTIN’, VAMPIRES FEEDIN’

01.08.10 Written by Vince Mancini

New in theaters this weekend (trailers after the jump):

Youth in Revolt
The reviews have been decent, but not quite as awesome as this looks to me from the previews.  No matter, I’d watch Michael Cera paint my house.  By the way, when you getting started on that, you little sh*t?  This hooker blood isn’t going to whitewash itself.  Sidenote: “Youth in Revolt” is my new euphemism for premature ejaculation.

Daybreakers
Despite being both an apocalypse scenario and about vampires, this actually looks good.  You can’t go wrong with Willem Dafoe, and this clip of people acting like human sharks gives me a hard on.  For his part, Ethan Hawke prepared for the role by starring in Reality Bites.  Ow, shut up, I’m already leaving.

Leap Year
Hooray, more Blackberry-related rom-com hijnks! (see: 1:20 of the trailer).  I’ve heard that in Ireland, on the 29th day of the second month every fourth year, tradition demands you make lame movie, get drunk, and forget about it the very next day.  And the guy whose idea it was has to F a leprechaun.

MICHAEL CERA & JWOWW FROM JERSEY SHORE

JWoww-michaelCera

After the jump, watch five new short vignettes from Youth in Revolt, starring and introduced by Michael Cera.  I’ve been sold on this movie ever since the red-band trailer, so I won’t be watching any more promotional clips before the movie comes out.  Out of respect to people like me, I’m putting this picture of Cera eating pizza with Jersey Shore’s JWOWW (is that the correct number of W’s?) courtesy of Videogum on the main page.  I can only assume they’re having a contest to see who’ll be the first to get a mouthful of grease and Italian sausage.  OH!  Fuggeddaboutit!  Yeah?  So’s ya motha, jerkoff.  *grabs crotch, drives off in cab*

YOUTH IN REVOLT STILL LOOKS AWESOME

12.28.09 Written by Vince Mancini

Here’s a new short clip from Youth in Revolt, the Michael Cera-alter-ego movie that I still think looks awesome.  It opens January 8th.  This clip has Zach Galifianakis, and I hope they use lots of him, because he was only in Up in the Air for a minute and then disappeared, and I totally got Zach Galifianakis blue balls.  He spends most of this clip slurping his beer and eating like a pig.  It’s so over the top gross that it’s an accurate parody of Bizarre Foods‘ Andrew Zimmern.  I don’t know why I keep trying to watch that show.  Seeing that disgusting f*ck eat is like watching two drunk cows French kiss.
