Will Arnett is out and Val Kilmer is in as the voice of "KITT the Talking Car" in NBC’s upcoming update of Knight Rider. With his part already completed and just two weeks to go before air, you gotta wonder why. Was Arnett drinking on the job? Banging the boss’ wife?
Producers Doug Liman, Dave Bartis and Dave Andron — along with the network and studio — were all fine with his performance. Problem is, Arnett had a contractual conflict of interest.
For the better part of a decade, Arnett has done voice-over work for General Motors — as the voice of GMC Trucks. NBC’s new "Knight," however, is "played" by a Ford Mustang.
What’s more, Ford isn’t simply providing cars for "Knight Rider." It’s taking an active role in the marketing and branding of the pic, a backdoor pilot for a possible series. Ford’s logo even appears all over NBC’s on-air promos for the pic. [Variety]
Oh my God, we couldn’t have him promoting two competing products! People might think celebrities just say whatever you pay them to say! WHAT’S THE WORLD COMING TO IF WE CAN’T TRUST CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENTS???!!? Brimley’s gonna have hell to pay if I find out Quaker isn’t the best oatmeal.
Poor Will Arnett, he should’ve just gotten a job on The Transformers movie. All the good guys are GM and the bad guys are Ford. Heck, they even use the song from the Camaro commercial. No one’s a bigger whore than Michael Bay. But tell us, what do you think about all this product placement, David Lynch? (answer after the jump)
