ALSO, THIS STUFF HAPPENED

POSTER FOR Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Between this, that indie abortion I posted this morning, and the Inglourious Basterds titles, I think it’s pretty clear that yellow title text is, like, the new thing.  It’s funny, because me and Zooey Deschanel were just talking about this at the opening of this new Vegan BBQ place over in DUMBO.  [full poster below, via FirstShowing]

MIKE JUDGE’S NEXT movie will be “Brigadier Gerard. It’s based on these short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle… So it’s kind of a big movie, I guess. It’s set during the Napoleonic Wars, where this character is kind of like Clouseau, similar to that.”  So basically, Napoleon asks Clouseau if he misses fighting in the Napoleonic Wars, and Clouseau says, “I vouldn’ say I’ve been meesing eet, Napoleon…”  [ThePlaylist]

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE has a new poster too.  Wow, it’s like hipster Christmas.  Thanks, Santa, I got everything I could ever want!  And yet I still feel vaguely dissatisfied…. [MSN]

COLIN HANKS TO PLAY a serial killer who wins the lottery, then sets off to win over his crush.  It’s good casting, because a serial killer who wins the lottery is pretty much the life story of this mouth-breathing oaf.  (I’m sure he’s nice, though, really). [Variety]

NEW WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE FOOTAGE

09.03.09 Written by Vince Mancini

The Telegraph recently took time out of their busy schedule of making up monkey attack stories to do this Where the Wild Things Are featurette on original author Maurice Sendak.  I’m posting it because it shows a few small snippets of footage from the movie, and I know this stuff is like heroin for college types.  Jesus yak-touching Christ, could they release this g’damn’d movie already?   What the hell do we have to do?  I showed Dave Eggers my personal essay, I had my GRE scores sent to Spike Jonze, and still, here we are, another month and a half before the movie comes out. I wish I’d never been born an overprivileged white intellectual.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS IS AT

08.07.09 Written by Vince Mancini

Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are comes out October 16th, and they just released this new, longer trailer.  The plot’s pretty simple — Max gets mad at his family and then goes to live with some big hairy beasts in the woods, who make him their king.  I think it’s a metaphor for imperialism.  Anyway, I don’t like this trailer as much as the last one because it seems to focus more on Max and his emotions and less on Max partying down with his monsters.  It’s a shame, nothing brings me down like a child’s happiness.  So annoying.

JONZE SCARES CHILD WITH WILD THING MASK

05.12.09 Written by Vince Mancini

Just in case you needed proof that we’re raising a generation of pussies, here’s Spike Jonze modeling a Where the Wild Things Are mask for a child, who refuses to come inside until he takes it off.  I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the kid’s scared of my favorite book as a kid.  After all, this is a generation raised on abstinent rockstars, abstinent vampires*, and basketball teams who don’t actually play basketball but sing super-gay songs about it.  If some old man tried to pull this crap on me when I was a kid, I would’ve kicked him in the nuts and rocked out to Slayer.

*They’re vampires, dammit! Sex-crazed minions of Satan!

SPIKE JONZE’S ADAPTATION OF EVERYONE POOPS

04.07.09 Written by Vince Mancini

As if the headline weren’t self-explanatory, here’s a video from Landline TV that imagines what would happen if Where the Wild Things Are director Spike Jonze adapted that other famous children’s book, Everyone Poops. My parents never read me that one.  Instead my dad just dragged me to the bathroom every time he laid something particularly long or discolored.  Mom too.  Me, I just take cell phone pics to send to friends.  Thanks, technology.
