The film Twins was released in 1988, when stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito were 41- and 44-years old, respectively. Additionally, Eddie Murphy was just 28-years old at the time, and while he wasn’t in the film, he was a rising comedy and action star with unlimited potential. Now, Schwarzenegger, DeVito and Murphy are 65, 67 and 51, respectively, and they’ve each had their fair share of personal relationship drama and controversy smeared across the media, so why wouldn’t they team up to make a sequel to Twins?

It seems that Universal Pictures is hellbent on bringing Triplets to the big screen ASAP, because Book of Mormon star Josh Gad has been hired along with Ryan Dixon to write the screenplay’s treatment, according to Deadline. Murphy will play the long-lost third Benedict brother, while Ivan Reitman will once again direct. Gad’s writing experience is limited to something called Gigi and the new comedy series, 1600 Penn (*cough, That’s My Bush was better, cough*) while Dixon has done… *flips papers around, stares at screen*… nothing.

Regardless, this is big news for Murphy, who continues his comedy acting renaissance that began with the horrible Tower Heist and was celebrated last week at Spike TV’s “Eddie Murphy: One Night Only” tribute show. Airing last night, the event honored the guy whose body of work was crushed by an ACME anvil sometime around 1992, and according to Extra, he was all laughs about being miles beyond his prime.

"COME WITH ME IF YOU WANT TO CLEAN HOUSES!"

The majority of yesterday’s Comic Con buzz in San Diego was focused on the Twilight panel, featuring all of the film’s stars as they talked about things like telepathic babies, life after the franchise, and shaving Taylor Lautner’s back for the summer heat. Lost in the shuffle, though, was the return of the original action star and former Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who appeared with his some of his castmates for the Expendables 2 panel.

It’s been quite a while since Arnold last had a piece in this Hollywood action game, so he told the audience a few ripping good yarns about what it was like returning to the set, and how it was different from crippling an entire state’s economy from being a politician.

“Well, we know you’ve been out of the business for eight years. Let me show you how to load a gun again and, Arnold, here’s how you throw a punch,” Schwarzenegger recalled his co-stars joking.

But after the verbal sparring of state government, Schwarzenegger found he was able to pick up where he left off as an action star fairly fast, doing fun things like taking out a knife and killing a guy and cutting his head off.

“You wish you could do some of those things when you’re in politics, but you know, you can’t,” Schwarzenegger said. (Via The AP)

I feel ya, Arnold. God knows politics would be a lot more fun if politicians could legally kill each other, but instead we’re stuck with them getting away with more acceptable crimes. Hey, at least you got to nail your housekeeper for all those years, right?

In addition to the Expendables 2 chit chat, Arnold also dropped a little nugget on us about the possibility of that Twins sequel that we recently heard about.

As far as movie premises are concerned,

“I would love to do another ‘Twins,’” Schwarzenegger said when asked if there were any past characters he’d like to revisit. “As a matter of fact, we’ve been talking about doing one and it’s called ‘Triplets.’ I’d find somebody like Eddie Murphy or someone that people would say, ‘How does that happen, medically speaking?’ and, ‘Physically, there’s no way!’ Then, somehow, we would explain it. That would be hilarious with what we know about someone like him.”

“I can see a poster,” the actor continued. “A billboard with us three. ‘They found another one!’ ‘Triplets!’ ‘Only their mother can tell them apart!’ I would do that in two seconds, because that’s real entertainment. You come out with that movie for Christmas, like December 5th or something like that, and you’re home free.”

Who knew the public was dumb enough that an idea like “a tall guy and a short guy are twins!” could entertain them for three-plus hours? (Get it? It’s silly!) Arnold Schwarzenegger, that’s who. It figures that he went into politics. Whenever people point out that we elected him governor, I can only chuckle uncomfortably and say “You should’ve seen the other guys!” while I point to Gary Coleman and a porn star.

Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn’t been out of office a year yet, and already he’s done

You’ll recall we were the first to report – in January, several weeks before another outlet got wind of the news – that a new Arnold Schwarzenegger-led Justin Lin-directed Terminator was in the works (though, to be fair, we were skeptical). Well that same source tells us today that Terminator mightn’t be the only other sequel Schwarzenegger has been offered.

Here’s the word :

“A Twins sequel. Knowing Arnold, Danny De Vito and Ivan Reitman are all still in touch and want to work together again, Universal came to them about it. It’s a germ of an idea that could spread fast.” [WhatsPlaying.au]

The fact that someone would offer this to them isn’t surprising. Whether anyone’s interested or can actually make it happen is another story.  In any case, it’s hard not to be intrigued by the idea of seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito onscreen together, regardless of the context.  Go ahead, pretend you wouldn’t watch this. Guess what?  You’re a f*cking liar. Besides, Twins is a nice time capsule.  You can tell everyone was doing a ton of cocaine in 1988, because only in a room full of cokeheads could you blurt out a throwaway half idea like “What if Arnold Schwarzenegger… and Danny DeVito… were TWINS?!?”  And before you know it, have a script, Twins hats, Twins mugs, Twins Super Bowl commercials, and Dodge as the official vehicle of Twins.  All because one guy is tall and buff and the other is short and fat.

I guess what I’m saying is, every stoner with a weird idea needs a cokehead buddy to make sure he executes it.  Much like bookish intellectual Arnold who grew up in the South Pacific had a street-smart brother whose skills as a con artist made them the perfect team.
