COMMENTS OF THE WEEK: THE WACKNESS

12.22.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Happy Monday (that’s an oxymoron, LOL!1!), FilmDrunkards.  Last week’s Comments of the Week winner will be receiving a brand new The Wackness DVD (trailer here).  Starring Josh Peck, Olivia Thirlby, and Ben Special K Kingsley, it’s a 90s period piece about a dope-smoking psychologist (Kingsley) who starts paying his young dealer in therapy sessions (Peck), only to watch him fall for his teenage daughter (Thirlby).  I’ve supposedly got a review copy on its way to me, I’ll post my review as soon as it gets here.

As always, the way this works is, when a commenter makes a comment worthy of recognition, YOU nominate it by copy and pasting it in the comments section of this post.  I’LL pick the winner from among the nominees next Sunday/Monday. (Often, like today, the winner gets a prize).  FYI, the nomination thread is always linked in the ABOUT section.

Let’s begin with the runners up. From the Encounters at the End of the World thread, I enjoyed the hell out of RoboPanda‘s Werner Herzog impression (is that obscure enough for you guys?  Good.):

RoboPanda says, “Zis is the albino pigmy seal, ze mutter and ze baby. When fully grown, zey are almost as intimidating as ze chickens. I had zis remembrance of ze chicken* when I look at ze mutter albino pigmy seal and zen I shotgun blast it to ze face. Und now we zoom in ze camera on the albino pigmy seal baby. Look at it so sad now. Nothingness. Der is no explaining. Mutter ist tot.  (* He has an issue with chickens. Seriously.)”

WACKNESS GETS A RED BAND TRAILER

06.19.08 Written by Vince Mancini

WATCH THE RED BAND TRAILER FOR THE WACKNESS AFTER THE JUMP

The Wackness hits theaters July 3rd, and just released a red-band trailer.  If you grew up in the 90s, guess what, you’re now old enough to see period pieces about your childhood. The story is that 18-year-old pot dealer Luke Shapiro trades weed to his shrink (Ben Special K Kingsley) in exchange for sessions.  The shrink tells him to get laid, so he tries to bang the shrink’s hot daughter (Olivia Thirlby).

It’s gotten pretty good reviews overall, but I don’t trust the instincts of filmmakers who cast Mary-Kate Olsen.  She’s in the trailer for less than a second, more than enough time to annoy the shit out of me.  What is she doing with her arms?  Why is she doing real movies, isn’t she a billionaire?  Why do my farts smell so good to me but so gross to everyone else?  There are many mysteries to ponder, friends.

FINAL TRAILER FOR ‘THE WACKNESS’

06.10.08 Written by Vince Mancini

WATCH THE TRAILER FOR THE WACKNESS AFTER THE JUMP

The Wackness stars newcomer Josh Peck, Olivia Thirlby (the hot chick from Juno… oh crap, the FBI! *jumps out window*), Special K, and GODDAMMIT WHO PUT AN OLSEN TWIN IN THIS MOVIE?

The theatrical run starts July 3rd in limited release – it premiered at Sundance in January to pretty good buzz, and all the hipsters are saying it’s the must-see movie of the year.  That means I’ll probably like it but pretend I don’t.

BEN KINGSLEY CHANNELS ‘THE DUDE’

04.29.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Quick, hit it with a rolled-up newspaper!

After the jump, I’ve got the newest trailer for The Wackness, starring Ben Kingsley as the drug-addled psychiatrist of a teenage drug dealer (set in 1994).  Olivia Thirlby plays Kingsley’s hot daughter and Method Man plays… um, a black guy.

The Wackness won the audience award at Sundance and has been getting decent reviews – I was thinking it looked interesting until Mary-Kate Olsen came along and pissed on my Grape Nuts.  Honestly, who puts an Olsen twin in their movie?  And if you do, why the hell is your movie playing at Sundance? It should be opening on 10,000 screens.  Either this dude made a really crappy deal or he’s driving around a platinum spacecar right now.

MARY-KATE & METHOD MAN, TOGETHER AT LAST

04.15.08 Written by Vince Mancini

MTV today has the trailer for The Wackness, a darling of the Sundance Fest about a teenage drug dealer and his stoner psychiatrist.

The Jonathan Levine-directed pic stars Mary Kate Olsen, Ben Kingsley, Olivia Thirlby from Juno and Method Man.  The ironic thing is that, though it’s a period piece (set in 1994), Mary-Kate stopped menstruating halfway through production due to an eating disorder.

Just kidding, I made that last part up.  She totally killed Heath Ledger though. (Too soon?)
