Dakota Fanning is in talks to join the cast of the Runaways biopic, in which Kristen Stewart is already signed to play Joan Jett.

Fanning is negotiating to play lead singer Cherie Currie in “The Runaways,” the biopic of the ’70s all-girl band that already has “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart playing Joan Jett. At 15, Fanning is the same age Currie was when she made her debut with the Runaways as the lead singer who belted out hard-edged tunes like “Cherry Bomb.” Currie became caught up in drugs and a hard-partying lifestyle. Hmm, let’s see… Dakota Fanning looking creepily grown up lately… 15-year-olds… “Cherry Bomb”…  …Yeah, I’m just gonna leave out the back before the cops show up, if you guys don’t mind.

Kristen Stewart, who stars in Twilight as Bella Swan (I absolutely cannot keep a straight face while typing that name), will play Joan Jett in The Runaways.

The Runaways were hugely influential as the first successful all-girl hard rock band; its members included guitarists Jett and Lita Ford, drummer Sandy West, singer-keyboardist Cherie Currie and bassist Jackie Fox. The band was brought together in late 1975 by impresario Kim Fowley, who thought a novelty act of teenaged girls performing in leather and lace would be an easy sell, but the girls ended up proving to be serious and influential musicians with songs like “Cherry Bomb.” The band lasted about four years together, falling apart over management and money issues.

The film will revolve around Jett and Currie and follow them from the band’s meteoric rise as teenagers to their dissolution and disillusionment. [THR]

Seems like a bit of a departure for Stewart, who up until now has played the “pretty girl with issues” almost exclusively; the girl all the weirdoes want to bone, like Jena Malone 2.0.  She plays most of her roles as awkward and shy – I dunno, maybe it’s just me, but she seems like someone who would give a damn about her bad reputation.   *puts on Dunce cap, truffle shuffles out the door with his dick out*
