Weekend Movie Guide: Gerard Butler Ain’t No C-Tates, Yo!

Written by Ashley Burns / 03.22.13

Opening Everywhere: The Croods, Admission, Spring Breakers, Olympus Has Fallen

FilmDrunk Suggests: That video above. It’s a dog named Milo dressed as the characters from The Wizard of Oz. It’s certainly a lot better than watching Gerard Butler sweat C-Tates’ jock. But it’s also not better than watching Ashley Benson and those other girls do stuff in bikinis, so plan your weekend accordingly.

This Week In Posters & Stills

Written by Vince Mancini / 03.22.13

Guys, I’ve been drowning in unwritten reviews from SXSW (still got a couple more of those to finish, get excited!). But don’t you worry, I didn’t forget about This Week in Posters. Better late than never, right?? It’s true for periods, at least. Okay, let’s get into it.

AFTER EARTH: Ah, what a perfectly generic poster perfectly befitting the King Midas of mediocrity, Will Smith, pictured here with his dumb wiener kid, Jaden. The Smith’s whole MO is to constantly shove their dumb kids down your throat, and then, when you rightly protest, now they’ve suddenly got an empowering message to deliver about standing up to your “haters” and having the courage to be yourself. Which becomes the righteous justification to shove them down your throat even further.

As for the poster, it’s the old silhouette trick, employed here slightly more adeptly than, say, Street Fighter. And at least they got the names and faces lined up, right? See? They’re not even good at being hateable.

This Week in Posters & Stills: A German Shepard in a Mask

Written by Vince Mancini / 01.25.13

Look, I’ve learned a few things about this blogging game, and one lesson I didn’t miss was that if you’ve got a picture of a dog in mask, you lead with that. So this is a still from Kick-Ass 2, featuring Jim Carrey as “Colonel Stars and Stripes.” Matthew Vaughn isn’t directing this one  – Jeff Wadlow, who directed Never Back Down, is – which makes me very skeptical. But if its got dogs in superhero costumes? It’s a start.

Captain Ameridog keeps his identity a secret so his enemies can’t go after his bitches.

Dreamworks remade ‘Brave’ with cavemen and Nic Cage

Written by Vince Mancini / 10.03.12

If kids movies of the last few years are any indication, the first ingredient to any kids movie is a sensitive little boy who doesn’t like doing normal boy stuff (How to Train Your Dragon, Paranorman) or a brash little girl who doesn’t like doing girl stuff (Brave, Whip It). Dreamworks’ The Croods starts with the latter, voiced by Emma Stone, whose caveman dad voiced by Nic Cage is always making her wear dresses and churn mammoth butter and not leave the cave. But she’s all like “F that noise!” because girl power, and next thing you know, purple turtles with dragonfly wings start flying around like Avatar. Yeah, man, I dunno either.
