Genius Parody: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close for 9/11 conspiracy theorists

01.17.12 Written by Vince Mancini

There are far too many supercuts, parodies, and fan-made trailers going around for me to post even a fraction of them (and for the most part, you should thank me), but I consider this parody of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close close to a must-watch. The insanely maudlin-looking movie adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel (which has already been accused by some of post-9/11 opportunism) probably ranks just behind War Horse and The Iron Lady in terms of unintentional parody films. (And really, aren’t we tired of these kinds of movies yet?)

Point is, it’s an easy (and deserving) target, but the folks at theDickheads went a clever way with it, re-imagining Tom Hanks’s beloved 9/11 casualty character as a really obnoxious 9/11 conspiracy theorist. Brilliant concept, and spot-on execution. “A plane crashes in an EMPTY FIELD and leaves no trace. ARE WE AT F*CKING HOGWARTS?!”

I love this.

Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock are furiously Oscarbating

Jonathan Safran Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is coming to the big screen, and sadly, the story does not follow an intense car ride to Disneyland with Gary Busey.  Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock are close to deals to star, with Steven Daldry (Billy Eliot, The Hours, The Reader) directing (woof) a script from Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

The film follows a quirky nine-year-old vegan/scientist/artist/pacifist who searches for information about a key he finds that belonged to his father, who died in the North Tower in the 9/11 attacks. Hanks and Bullocks will play the parents of the child (who is yet to be cast) with the plot utilizing “multiple narrators and time frames.” [ThePlaylist]

Sorry, I prefer my 9/11 movies with Robert Pattinson dying in them, thank you very much. However, I do so enjoy the humorously precocious child character. I mean I really, really love it.  The only question is, will he turn out to be wise beyond his years?  Ooh, don’t tell me.  The anticipation is killing me.

HARVEY WEINSTEIN IS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH

09.30.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Weinstein and Rudin tied for first in the Les Grossman Lookalike Contest

So despite the fact that studio head Harvey Weinstein (left) and producer Scott Rudin (right) are basically the same person, they’re in the middle of a big fight.  At issue is The Reader, a movie Billy Elliot director Steven Daldry did for The Weinstein Company.  The film was first delayed 8 weeks by Nicole Kidman’s pregnancy, then faced another, even sexier delay when they had to wait for one of the actors to turn 18 so she could shoot a sex scene.  Even though it started shooting four months behind schedule, Harvey still wanted it finished in time for awards season (deadline is in November), despite that the director, who officially had creative control, said that was basically impossible. Rudin, who backed the director, claims Weinstein explored a number of sleazy options for forcing him to finish earlier, including claiming recently deceased producers Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella “would have wanted” the movie finished in 2008 (I use that strategy with chicks all the time).  But this is all backstory.  You can get the full rundown here.

Today’s news is that Weinstein offered to give $1 million to charity if someone could produce the supposed email in which Rudin accused him of mistreating Anthony Minghella’s and Sydney Pollack’s families.  It seems a charity is in luck, because Nikki Finke just published it:
