FilmDrunk.com is the movie blog that plays rough, just the way your mother likes it. We cover all things movie-related, but just because we watch a lot of movies don’t expect us to act all serious about them. Think of FilmDrunk as the film industry’s older brother who punches it in the shoulder when it acts queer.

YOU'VE BEEN CUMBERBATCHED!

While I eagerly await his marriage to Imogen Poots, with whom I assume he will eventually give birth to a powdered wig (they’re not together… yet), Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in JJ Abrams Star Trek sequel. There are conflicting reports on whether he’ll play a villain (according to Variety) or not (Deadline says it could be either), but he joins the already-cast Noel Clark, Alice Eve, and Peter Weller. Cumberbatch is best known for his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, playing Sherlock Holmes in a BBC series, and leading the silly name brigade to victory at the battle of snoggy bottoms.

It will be interesting to see whether Cumberbatch plays another high-class man of wealth, a role he claims to have been typecast in as a result of his rich upbringing. Jeez, you would’ve never guessed by the name.

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has a ghost from his past casting a shadow over his career: he was too privileged growing up. The son of actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, Cumberbatch attended the Harrow school, which now charges $47703 in admission per year [*waves frilly hanky, faints* -Ed.]. As a result of his young posh education, he says casting directors are unwilling to see him in a role beyond that of a wealthy menace.

“I was brought up in a world of privilege. It can ostracize you from normal codes of conduct in society,” he told the Radio Times. “Being a posh actor in England you cannot escape the class-typing from whatever side you look at it. I realized from quite early on that, although I wasn’t trying to make a class specialty of it, I was playing slightly asexual, sociopathic intellectuals.” [HuffPo]

I hear he was once so upset about being served a shrimp fork for an oyster platter that he slapped the craft services supervisor with a white glove. I hear he also refers to picking up chicks as “hunting the fox” and has a secret sexual peccadillo that involves a euphemistic craving for “blood pudding.” To paraphrase commenter Galway Girl, Benedict Cumberbatch is so British, my pack of smokes started buttf*cking each other.

As part of James Franco’s ongoing mission to prove that he’s smarter and more cultured than you, he recently debuted his first solo art show in lower Manhattan. (I saw a solo art show once. The dildo could’ve been bigger). The theme was “sexual confusion” and naturally, included a piece that involved Captain Kirk and Spock making out.

“The Dangerous Book Four Boys,” which includes sculpture, photography and drawing, as well as film and video, addresses boyhood and the “sexual confusion” of adolescence, as Ms. Heiss put it. Short films focus on demolition, showing burning or bullet-riddled structures like a plastic toy home or a large wooden rocket (the exhibition contains originals or replicas of these). Another work explores a romantic encounter between “Star Trek” characters Spock and James T. Kirk.
“I feel like shows or films that deal with kids, they’re playing to all of these sexual feelings that you have at that age, but they don’t fully admit to it,” he said. “So I kind of try to draw that out. The implicit in those shows and books, I try to make it a little more explicit,” Franco said. [WSJ]

Look, I’m not one of those people who’s quick to throw out “all actors are totally queer” (okay, I am, but I’m not proud of it), especially not with my Columbia grad-school classmate James Franco (name drop!). But between this, his penis-flopping, gay-bashing short film, playing prominent gay men in both Howl and Milk, and that story about how he tricks guys into simulated anal sex for short film projects (which, admittedly, is pretty funny), at some point you have to wonder: dude, what are you trying to prove? Everyone is a little gay. Fine, I can go with that. I might not rape a guy in prison, but I’d sure as hell watch. Point is, we get it. Now either go suck a wiener, or leave the gay men to speak for themselves. I still love you though. Just not in a gay way. By which I mean bring Kimiko.

When I heard Diora Baird was playing an Orion Slave Girl in Star Trek, I was rightly tumescent, because Diora Baird’s breasts are made from the laughter of children and that mixture of maple syrup and melted butter that dribbles down the side of your pancakes. Then the movie came out and deflated my wiener with the one-two punch of the lack of beautiful Baird breasts and Zachary Quinto’s intrusive eyebrows. Today, we can finally see the Diora Baird scene that didn’t make the movie. And it’s… an even bigger disappointment than her not being in the movie, somehow. Dear JJ Abrams: you hired Diora Baird for your movie and you kept her fully clothed? You’re worse than Stalin. You’re like Hitler, if Hitler had promised the Jews ice cream before he gassed them, and then kicked a puppy. Yours in undying hatred, Vince.

I also like how the scene involves Kirk apologizing to an Orion Slave Girl for using her. Dude, she’s a slave girl. It’s in the title. You don’t have to treat them like Dilythian Equality Womyn.

This is a just-released deleted scene from Star Trek. I loved the movie, but this highlights the one aspect I hated — shaky-cam, quick-cut action sequences that give you no sense of the spatial awareness of a scene, just the cliff’s notes cause and effect. Anyway, I’ll let /Film describe the context because that’s easiest for me.

JJ Abrams shot a sequence for the Star Trek reboot featuring a few members of the infamous alien race, the Klingons. The scene featured Nero [Eric Bana] chained to a table being interrogated by the masked, ruffle-headed creatures with Centurion slugs who are looking to find out information on the future. The sequence basically explained what Nero was up to in the missing years. This is one of the deleted scenes in the prison break sequence that has found its way online to promote the upcoming DVD release.

Wait, so this was supposed to be the scene that finally gives us Klingons and now that it’s here they’re wearing a mask the whole time? That’s like paying for sex and then finding out you have to wear a condom. Relax bitch I told you I was clean.

New Spock Zachary Quinto stars in this Funny or Die video called Hostage: A Love Story. It’s basically a one-joke premise with the one joke being that he swears a lot, but I have to admit, Quinto hasn’t made me laugh this much since Buspockke. The only thing this video could use is Gary Busey jumping down from the rafters shouting, “I’m your worst nightmare, butthorn!”

(in space, no one can hear your lisp)

I hope everyone refilled their inhalers this weekend, because I’ve got Battlestar Galactica movie news to PWN your recessive genes with. Universal Pictures has announced that Bryan Singer is attached to direct the big screen version of the cult-hit series. Hang onto your imitation vaginas though, the studio claims that this will not be the SyFy channel (then Sci-Fi) fisting fest that you’re used to:

…Singer will clearly put his own creative stamp on the project, as the studio indicates that the film will be “a complete reimagination.” [Variety]

This reminds me of the time I had sex with this girl from community college. When we awoke in the morning, I asked her how she liked her eggs, to which she replied “over easy”. I immediately jumped out of the bunk bed and told her, “Well sorry, but you’re getting them fertilized. Consider it a complete reimagination of how you previously thought you liked your eggs”.

Though yet to be officially confirmed, Battlestar’s Wikipedia page reports that Singer’s version will be based on the original series which aired from 1978-1979 on the ABC network. Personally, I’ve never really given a rat’s ass about either version of the program, but I’ve heard from many reliable sources (i.e. people that I don’t want to kill) that Battlestar Galactica is a top-notch program. I suppose the best we can hope for at this point, is that Singer doesn’t try too hard to Star Trek this thing and at least remembers to cast Sinbad as the lead.

*crosses fingers and queefs*

(Haha, get it? Women be shoppin’ and men be hatin’ commitment! It’s funny ’cause it’s true!)

The Proposal earned $34 million to land a big number one on the box office chart, despite looking like a lame mashup of every crappy romantic comedy ever. They make this movie once a month. The only thing good about this one was that it didn’t have Kate Hudson or Matthew McConaughey in it.

The Hangover was number two with $26.9 million, only declining 18% from last weekend and holding better than just about any movie in recent memory (again, that’s movie blogger code for “I don’t want to look it up”). So far it’s made almost $153 million on a $35 million budget, which is good news for anyone who wants to make or see an R-rated comedy. The bad news is that without Todd Phillips and Zach Galifianakis, The Hangover would basically have been an Entourage episode. So what’ll happen now is, they’ll greenlight a bunch of pandering, “raunchy” comedies which will suck (think American Pie sequels) and won’t make money, and then we’ll be right back to it being hard to make R-rated comedy again. Also? We’re all gonna be dead in 40 years anyway. Happy Monday!

(full top 10 below)

1. The Proposal, $34.114m, budget $40m
Exceeded all expectations, except for the expectation that it not suck.

2. The Hangover, $26.855m, $152.919m total, $35m budget
Arguably the biggest hit of the year so far.

3. Up, $21.336m, $224.113m total, $175m budget
I watched this a few weeks ago and my eyes kept watering. So I said “BOY, THESE 3D GLASSES ARE REALLY MAKING MY EYES WATER,” really loud just in case anyone saw. Good save, Mancini, good save, I thought to myself.

4. Year One, $20.200m, $60m budget
Sure, it’s got some really bad jokes in it, but it had some good ones too.

5. The Taking of Pelham 123, $11.300m, $43.332m total, $100m budget
Don’t care.

6. Night at the Museum 2, $7.3m, $155.953m total, $150m budget
Don’t care.

7. Star Trek, $4.7m, $239.444m total, $150m budget
The other huge hit of the summer. Deserves every penny.

8. Land of the Lost, $3.976m, $43.672m total, $100m budget
Still got a looong way to go to make its money back. Boy, who would’ve thought spending $100m to make movie out of a TV show that was never that good or popular in the first place was a bad idea, huh?

9. Imagine That, $3.1m, $11.351m total, $55m budget
So how many bombs like this does Eddie Murphy get before he’s not allowed to make these anymore? This feels like the seventh or eighth one.

10. Terminator Salvation, $3.070m, $119.513m total, $200m budget
It’ll make its money back in foreign markets if it hasn’t already. Americans may be stupid, but foreigners like explosions even more than we do.
