Ever since it was announced that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi would both be back for Spider-Man 4 and 5, the question on everyone’s mind has been, “For the love of God, what about Kirsten Dunst?”
“I’m in,” said the actress matter of factly. However, when pressed to make the announcement official, Dunst quickly changed her tone, and rather cryptically added, “I’m not saying anything, I know there’s rumors…” [MTV]
There you have it. Not a done deal yet, but it’s looking likely enough that I feel comfortable ending my hunger strike.
Back in June Vince posted about Spiderman 4 being on the fast track, and now Nikke Finke is reporting that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi have both signed on for the project. Sony may film Spiderman 5 at the same time to reduce costs. If they really want to reduce costs, they should take a page from Italian Spiderman (video below). Nikke also reports:
“Once you find out who the villain is, you’ll know who’s playing it.” That should lead to speculation that Dylan Baker’s character of Dr. Curt Connors will ultimately turn into The Lizard as he did in the comic books. There’s one other character that’s been set up but is a real longshot – Daniel Gillies, who plays John Jameson, the astronaut fiance of Mary Jane in Spider-Man 2. In the comics he becomes the villain Man-Wolf. Raimi has said in the past that he wants the best actors to play the villains in the movie, not necessarily the most famous.
Burn.
Producer Laura Ziskin said this weekend during a speech to California and Nevada theater owners that she was “hopeful” that Spider-Man 4 would be ready by 2011, a date later than the settings of many of the sci-fi films I grew up watching. You’ve failed me again, future.
Neither star Tobey Maguire nor director Sam Raimi is yet committed to work on the next installment. But Sony has paid Marvel to renew its rights. [LA Times]
Also, they don’t have a script yet. But fingers crossed, they’re working on it. In related news, I’m planning to pay off my student loans by 2017. Give or take.
Yesterday I reported on rumblings that Tobey Maguire wouldn’t be back for Spider-Man 4 and 5, and that the studio had a couple douchingtons in mind as possible replacements.
Today someone in the know claims those stories were totally bogus.
Head of Media Relations for Sony/Columbia Pictures Steve Elzer told the IESB today that the Fugit story is 100% false and added, "No one is being considered for the role but Tobey. Period."
And with that, the six people still interested in another Spider-Man movie collectively mouth breathed a sigh of relief. In related news, if I were Spider-Man I would definitely shout "SKEET SKEET!" every time I shot my webbing.
