DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Geoffrey Johns recently revealed via Twitter that Sherlock Holmes‘ Mark Strong would be playing Sinestro in the Green Lantern, currently filming in New Orleans with Ryan Reynolds and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell.  Johns also revealed a preference for waffles over Waffle-O’s, but people seemed more interested in the Sinestro thing.  The announcement refutes an earlier rumor that Jackie Earle Haley would play Sinestro.

I started to read the Wikipedia article on Sinestro because the only thing I know about Green Lantern is that he doesn’t seem to actually carry a lantern.  I mean what. is. the deal.   Sadly, the article is more than 5,000 words.  But from what I gather, Sinestro has basically the same powers as The Green Lantern except he’s kind of a dick. Meanwhile, if you’re keeping score at home, the page on the Darfur conflict has about 4,000 words.   Well done, nerds.  Hey Africa, how does that pwnage taste?  Is it like food?  Oh right, you wouldn’t know.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Peter Saaaarsgåaård (great actor, check him out in Salton Sea) was in negotiations to play Ryan Reynolds-nemesis Dr. Hector Hammond in the Green Lantern.  Hammond is a psychic who got his powers from a meteor.  Meanwhile, HitFix reports that they have it on good authority (a psychic meteor, perhaps?) that Jackie Earle Haley will play Sinestro.

…Unless something drastically changes, he is in the film.
I’m not going to play a semantics game here… there is a very real difference in meaning between terms like “in talks” and “in negotiations” and “on a list,” and I’m not sure where they are in that process right now.  But I am willing to say that Haley is the guy.  He just wrapped up some additional shooting on “Nightmare” for the studio, and they’re said to be extremely happy with his work in the film.  The groundwork is being laid in the first “Lantern” for a much larger role for Sinestro later on if this first movie does well, and they like the idea of continuing their relationship with Haley.

If you guessed that a character named “Sinestro” isn’t a gentle Inn keeper or kindly retard wrangler, you’d be right.

According to Harry Knowles over at AintitCoolIcan’tSpell, Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen‘s Rorschach) is “on the list” to play “Sinestro” in “the Green Lantern movie.” (*air quotes*)

I’m putting this in the caveat as a rumor [??] – as opposed to a rock solid, take it to the bank story. Right now, Martin Campbell is in the process of finalizing the rest of the cast for GREEN LANTERN to surround Ryan Reynolds with. And I’m not sure why, but I’ve just hit the point where I’m giddy and hopeful about a GREEN LANTERN movie. This story came from someone working on the film. That part is solid, what isn’t – and won’t be till it all gets finalized is the fact that JACKIE EARLE HALEY is leading the list to play SINESTRO!!!

Meanwhile, Collider talked to Jackie Earle Haley himself about it, and Haley says he hasn’t heard anything.  He also denied ever screen testing for the movie, and didn’t bite anyone’s face or anything, it was really pretty disappointing.  Oh yeah, so Sinestro: Read the rest of this entry »
