These pictures from Semi-Pro have been out for a couple days now, but the movie smacks of Ferrell mailing it in and his hair looks like a hobo’s vagina.

On the other hand, this clip, of Will Ferrell disrupting a live newscast to tell everyone that GE is bankrupt and Ken Lay wears makeup (before or after he died I’m not sure), is brilliant more inspired than usual.

I love how pissed the male anchor gets.  “Damn you, Ferrell, you’ve interrupted my human interest story about a ferret using a typewriter! My journalistic integrity has been compromised!"  If he’s faking it, he does a great job.  He reminds me of the Saturday Night Live sketch about the morning news show whose teleprompter breaks and they start eating each other. 

And hey, is that John McEnroe? Judging by his shirt, he’s a medieval crusader now.

This is the new R-rated trailer for Semi-Pro.  It’s rated R because they say "dick", "weiner" (twice), and "cock" (three times). Of course, they don’t actually show any – sorry ladies. If anonymous emails have taught me anything, it’s that ladies love pictures of man genitals.

Anyway, Semi-Pro hits theatres February 29th – that’s Leap Day!  Isn’t that funny, a basketball movie coming out on Leap Day? 

Yup, that’s all I got.  This one just sucked the funny right out of me.

Farrell stars as Jackie Moon, the owner-coach-player of the American Basketball Association’s Flint Michigan Tropics, who “rallies his teammates to make their NBA dreams come true.” The film also stars Woody Harrelson, Andre Benjamin, Maura Tierney, and Jackie Earle Haley. Kent Alterman makes his feature directorial debut.  

Will Ferrell is really funny.  So funny, in fact, that people who make movies think they can stick him in front of the camera and then just shoot whatever comes out of his mouth*.  And that’s how we end up with stuff like Blades of Glory and Talladega Nights – shitty movies with a couple funny parts.

Looks like Semi-Pro follows the same formula.  Next time I’d like to see them take more time on the script than it takes to write “Will Ferrell has an afro.”

While I do enjoy the phrase "Let’s get sweaty. Basketball sweaty," I feel compelled to point out that there do happen to be other decades in world history besides the 1970s that are ripe for comedic parody.

I mean, what about the 1770s?  Mole hair ascots, plaid waistcoats, and matching snuff boxes?  My word, what dandy fops we all were back then.  And let me tell you, you haven’t seen muff until you’ve seen 1770s muff.
