The Gravity Trailer is Here

Written by Vince Mancini / 05.10.13

At long last, we have the hotly anticipated trailer for Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. Aside from it being Cuarón’s first feature since 2006′s Children of Men, it reportedly has a 20-minute opening shot and while it was once set to star Robert Downey Jr. and Angelina Jolie, the parts ended up going to George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. I mean, that’s cool too, I guess. (*kicks can*)

In the clip, astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) and Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) marvel at the sunrise — from space. Wearing space suits, they float in the blackness of the universe 372 miles above the Earth. But when their shuttle collides with some debris, the ship is destroyed, forcing the two of them to fight for survival in an environment they cannot control, and they have no place to land. Scrambling to hold onto one another, and then to any solid object that might provide a respite from the nothingness of zero gravity, they fight to find a way to contact Earth and make it safely home.
“Gravity” is scheduled for release October 4. [MTV]

Finally, a use of Futura font that actually makes sense!

Needless to say, Cuarón? In space? Oh, I’ll play your game, you rogue. But with big box office stars like George Clooney and Sandra Bullock on the bill, I’m a little surprised they went with the one-name, indie sci-fi name a lá Solaris or Moon and not something more commercial. Say, “Way Up in the Air,” or “The Blind Side of the Moon.” Yes, I’m a marketing genius. (*puts on foam cowboy hat marked “GENIUS,” pets cat*)

Trailer: Will Smith’s Kid & M. Night Shyamalan remade Avatar, basically

Written by Vince Mancini / 12.10.12

Will and Jaden Smith prepare to watch The Last Airbender

Did you ever dream that one day Will Smith and his obnoxious son would team up with M. Night Shyamalan for a sci-fi film in the vein of Avatar? …Yeah, me, neither. I guess I lack a “European sensibility.” But for the rest of you paté-toting exposition lovers, today brings us the trailer for After Earth, M. Night Shyamalan’s follow up to The Last Airbender (combined RottenTomatoes score of Shyamalan’s last three movies: 47%), starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith, as a future general and his son crash landed and trying to survive on a now-dangerous Earth. Check out the trailer after the jump, but I warn you, Will Smith’s accent is a Keanu-in-Dracula level train wreck. It is glorious.

Trailer: Tom Cruise is the human Wall-E in ‘Oblivion’

Written by Vince Mancini / 12.10.12

Sprightly Jack Reacher Tom Cruise plays a new Jack – Jack Harper, because all action-movie protagonists are named Jack – in Oblivion, a sci-fi film from Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, based on his own comic book and adapted by a committee of screenwriters including William Monahan and Michael Arndt. Set in the FUTURE, after a DESTRUCTIVE WAR has pushed humans into a colony in the SKY, Cruise plays a DRONE REPAIRMAN sent to explore THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH, where he finds a group of SURVIVING HUMANS, which leads him to question EVERYTHING HE’S BEEN TOLD. Oops, sorry about the capitalization there, I thought we were playing sci-fi mad-libs.

TRAILER FOR NEW BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

Written by Vince Mancini / 12.01.08

This new trailer for the next season of Battlestar Galactica has been sitting in my inbox for a while now, and I hadn’t posted it because, I’ll be honest, I still haven’t gotten around to watching this show. It’s just that usually when I’m flipping through the Sci-Fi channel, something like this is on.  But if I had a nickel for every time someone told me how awesome Battlestar Galactica is, I’d have a big bag of nickels with which to wang in the ding dong the next guy to tell me how awesome Battlestar Galactica is.  F-ck, that last sentence gave me vertigo.  Anyway, I’ll catch up soon, I promise.  So, uh, what’s with the dude in the eye patch, does he always speak in Bob Dylan lyrics?

THE RETURN OF RYAN FILL UP HEY

Written by Vince Mancini / 10.15.08

This is the trailer for Franklyn, a British Sci-Fi film from first time writer-director Gerald McMorrow.  Ryan Phillippe plays the lead role once slated for Ewan McGregor.

Franklyn follows four intertwining stories, three of which take place in contemporary London, the fourth in a parallel fantasy world called Meanwhile City. In Meanwhile City, atheist vigilante Jonathan Preest (Phillippe) fights against the various religious presences. Ultimately, his path crosses with three others (Eva Green, Sam Riley, Bernard Hill) from London.

Looks like it could be interesting, but let’s be honest, the bar’s pretty low for sci fi these days.  No army of monkeys?  No little kids driving race cars?  F-ck it, sign me up.  Also – you know you’re a real atheist when you spell your name “preest”.
