The Golden Globes Love Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, apparently

Written by Vince Mancini / 12.13.12

“My friend, there are three things I love in this world. Salmon fishing. The Yemen. And literal titles.”

The Golden Globes released their nominations today – do people care about this, I can never tell – and as usual, the fun part is figuring out who threw the best parties for the shady-ass HFPA voters based on their nominations. I’m going to assume Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, which grossed a measly $9 million in North America (plus a modest $25 million worldwide) and was reviewed at a tepid 67 percent on RottenTomatoes (with most of the positive ones not all that glowing), but managed to get best picture, best actress, and best actor nominations, with nary a Johnny Depp cameo to be found (foreigners love Johnny Depp, it’s science). Ewan MacGregor’s publicist must give one heck of a beej.

Best Motion Picture – Drama

“Argo”
“Django Unchained”
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln”
“Zero Dark Thirty”

The insane thing about Zero Dark Thirty getting nominated in virtually every organizations’ nominations is that literally no one except awards voters has even seen it yet. Talk about knowing your audience.

Best Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical

“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”
“Les Miserables”
“Moonrise Kingdom”
“Silver Linings Playbook”
“Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

Daniel Day-Lewis, “Lincoln”
Richard Gere, “Arbitrage”
John Hawkes, “The Sessions”
Joaquin Phoenix, “The Master”
Denzel Washington, “Flight”

Your Mid-Week Guide To DVD And Streaming: The Three Stooges Lockout Intruders From Casa De Mi Padre

Written by Morton Salt / 07.17.12

Kate Upton and her breasts, Larry and Moe. (Not pictured: her pubic hair.)

After the past few weeks with only a few new major studio flicks getting DVD releases, this week we’ve got plenty.  Unfortunately, it’s stuff like The Three Stooges. It’s not all bad though -assuming you like movies with Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Jon Hamm, Guy Pearce, Clive Owen, Mel Gibson, Ewan McGregor, Willem Dafoe, Tom Hardy, Jackie Mason, Ben Foster, or that dude who played Balki on Perfect Strangers.  That’s right, they are all in new movies hitting DVD this week. Besides those stars, we’ve got flicks about vampires and school shootings and even a found-footage haunted house flick.  There’s even Davy Jones’ final film appearance, and how could you pass that up?

The DVDs:
The Three Stooges
Casa de mi Padre
Friends With Kids
Lockout
Intruders
Get The Gringo
Salmon Fishing In The Yemen
4:44 Last Day On Earth
Deserter
Goldberg – P.I.
Here
Virgin Alexander
Girls Gone Dead
Midnight Son
Hidden Rage
Documenting The Grey Man

The only way to know for certain which film features your favorite Monkee is to keep reading on the next page.  If you’re more of a Micky Dolenz fan, feel free to skip right to the Netflix suggestions by clicking here.

Ewan McGregor stars in ‘We Bought a Salmon Zoo in Yemen’

Written by Vince Mancini / 12.16.11

Here’s the trailer for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, adapted from the the Paul Torday novel by Slumdog/127 Hours screenwriter Simon Beaufoy and directed by Chocolat/Cider House Rules director Lasse Halstrom, starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. On the surface, it’s a film about a Yemeni entrepreneur with a crazy idea to attract tourism, but AT ITS CORE™, it’s a story about having the courage to swim against the current (GET IT? LIKE SALMON.)

Is it just me, or does every film these days sound like a human interest story on local TV? SALMON FISHING in the YEMEN! HORSE survives WAR! MAN buys ZOO! INJURED DOLPHIN inspires SOLDIERS! I’m telling you, whoever figures out how to adapt Squirrel on Waterskis is going to be balls deep in cash money. (*shoos dog away from dead owner’s grave, goes back to hugging lion*)
