Thirty-One Years Later, Castle Wolfenstein Is Going To Be A Movie

Written by Ashley Burns / 11.02.12

“Take that, Hitler”, a teenage Burnsy yelled while eating Bagel Bites.

I never played the original Castle Wolfenstein for the Apple II, because I was two-years old when it was released and I’m a child of the Nintendo boom era. But I played the ever-loving doody out of Wolfenstein 3D, which is why I’m pleased as a Nazi monster hunter that Panorama Media is moving forward with the long-rumored Castle Wolfenstein movie.

First the (sort of) bad news – Wolfenstein is being produced by Samuel Hadida, whose claim to fame is being the man behind Resident Evil: Extinction and Silent Hill. Those are not technically “good” movies. In fact, I almost walked out of Silent Hill until I realized how funny it was. But now the good news – Roger Avary will write and direct the film, and he wrote Pulp Fiction and directed Killing Zoe, the two quintessential films in my stereotypical suburban white teenager years. But he also wrote Silent Hill, so who the hell knows what to expect?

As for the plot, Geek Tyrant fills us in

OH YEAH, THIS OTHER GUY IS IN JAIL TOO.

Written by Vince Mancini / 10.01.09

(“What has two index fingers and sucks at driving?”)

Roger Avary, who won an Oscar for co-writing Pulp Fiction and also directed Rules of Attraction, was sentenced to a year in jail plus five years probation, for DUI and vehicular manslaughter, for causing a fatal accident in January 2008.  There are lots of fors in that sentence.

Avary pleaded guilty in August to gross vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving for the 2008 crash that killed a passenger in Avary’s Mercedes in Ventura County. Authorities say Avary’s car was traveling at more than 100 mph when it crashed into a telephone pole.  Avary’s wife was ejected from the vehicle and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. [Variety]

I’d love to feel sorry for him, but… 100 miles per hour?  Don’t you idiots know you’re supposed to be extra cautious when you drive hammered?  Christ, it’s like none of these GD hippies teach their kids how to drunk drive anymore.

BEOWULF, PULP FICTION WRITER KILLED A GUY

Written by Vince Mancini / 01.14.08

Avary with that guy from Lost whose lips never move.

Roger Avary, who won an oscar along with Quentin Tarantino for writing Pulp Fiction (he’s credited as “stories by Roger Avary”), was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and DUI.

Avary, 42, was the driver in the single-car collision shortly after midnight Sunday in Ojai, said Capt. Ross Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Killed in the accident was Andreas Zini, 34, a resident of Italy who was apparently visiting the couple. Firefighters cut Zini from the car with Jaws of Life, and he died several hours later at Ventura County Medical Center.

Avary’s wife Gretchen, 40, was ejected from the car and found in the road by deputies, Bonfiglio said. She was hospitalized in stable condition.

Perhaps a joke here wouldn’t be in the best taste.  I may make light of killing hookers, but that’s because killing hookers is funny.  Manslaughter is no laughing matter.
