This previously unreleased clip from Rain of Madness, the Tropic Thunder movie-within-a-movie, um, making-of documentary… uh, thing… recently hit the web. I’m posting it because it has Robert Downey in blackface, and Robert Downey in blackface is like Jesus, but without all the religion-y stuff. He really deserves to win the Oscar for this. I know Heath Ledger was great as the Joker and all, but then again, screw you, Deady von Corpserson.
So remember Rain of Madness, that whole “making of” mockumentary on Tropic Thunder? I mean, not about, like, the actual Tropic Thunder, but the movie within the movie, which is also called Tropic Thunder? If that didn’t give you an aneurysm, today’s news is that you can watch Rain of Madness free on iTunes. All you have to do is register with iTunes and promise to sign your name on the devil’s cock with baby tears or whatever else is in their terms and conditions that no one reads.
The fake director is a German guy named Jan Jürgen, a cutesy parody of Werner Herzog and his intense existential voice overs in Grizzly Man. Jürgen is played by Thunder co-writer Justin Theroux (who’s also been hired to write Iron Man 2). I haven’t watched the whole thing, but it looks like it could be interesting. Or maybe Tom Cruise just dicks around in a fat suit and everyone raves about his ability to wear makeup. Find out for yourself! Spin the magic wheel of chance! *speeds away on unicycle*
Tropic Thunder just released some new viral stuff today, as part of the Rain of Madness movie-within-a-movie-within-a-movie-with-OUCH MY BRAIN! campaign. This one focuses on the rapper Alpa Chino, for whom Tropic Thunder is his first film role, and his hit single “I Love the Pussy”. They’ve also created a MySpace page for him. Like all MySpace pages, it immediately garnered a million unironic comments from idiots with dollar signs and "R.I.P." in their names – like $TEVIE T/R.I.P. RUSSELL BIETCH, who says, "Dude dis page is pimped out." I’d love to believe that’s part of the marketing, but I’ve been on Myspace too many times not to assume it’s a real person.
There’s also a much less interesting video about Kevin Sandusky (after the jump), who also has a MySpace page. Gosh, what other propaganda can I disseminate? You guys know about the Jews controlling all the banks right? But really it all comes back to that damned Xenu. He and his alien spirits, trying to get you to sell Avon. Who wants a personality test?
In a bit of saavy marketing, or grating self-indulgence, the makers of Tropic Thunder have put together Rain of Madness, a mockumentary about the making of the film, which already is a comedy with a movie-within-a-movie premise. That’s, like, ssssoooo meta my eyes are bleeding Chaucer quotes.
Steve Coogan plays the director and then there’s the other cop from Superbad and a bunch of other people who I don’t feel like looking up. It’s all obviously playing on the Hearts of Darkness-Apocalypse Now connection except that it can’t possibly hope to top the comedic heights of Martin Sheen having a heart attack during filming. Unless they did, in which case let’s talk after-lunch fellatio, fellas.
