VIDEO: What if Disney’s ‘Paperman’ ended in a three way?

Written by Vince Mancini / 03.19.13

Disney’s Oscar-winning short, Paperman, not to be confused with The Paperboy, that movie where Nicole Kidman peed on Zac Efron, was a magical realist romp that simultaneously warmed hearts and failed almost every test of basic logic (not that it wasn’t still enjoyable). As our own Xander Crews described it, “So, uh, I think I just got fired. Also, these paper airplanes really want us to bone. Also, if we were going to buildings directly across the street from each other, why were we taking different trains?”

And now CollegeHumor has put together a little video that’s basically gives Paperman the old-school Tarantino-style retelling  from the point of view of all those magical paper airplanes. Not to give too much away, but I could see Sony commissioning a feature-length version of this under the title “Bad Paper.” Also, CollegeHumor, did you guys really just do two minutes of traditional animation for a threesome joke? Jesus, man. Maybe relax and throw up a cat photoshop or two. You’re really throwing off the internet humor curve.

The producer of ‘Paperman’ got kicked out of the Oscars for throwing paper airplanes

Written by Vince Mancini / 02.25.13

As we’ve seen, Disney’s Oscar-winning short happily ever after, without a care for all those old people who now need to write new wills. Well it turns out, one of Paperman‘s producers, Kristina Reed (above), decided to celebrate last night’s Oscar win by throwing paper airplanes of her own inside the auditorium. Which resulted in her promptly getting kicked out of the Dolby Theatre.

This is what happens when magical realism stops being magical and starts getting real.

After Disney’s Paperman won the Academy Award for best animated short Sunday, producer Kristina Reed began throwing paper airplanes, about three or four — with kisses on them, like the ones seen in the film — from her seat in the mezzanine.

You don’t even want to know how Michael Haneke celebrated.

The paper planes were nowhere near the stage, instead shooting straight down from the balcony. It went largely unnoticed by the crowd, but security didn’t think the act was very sweet, kicking her out of the Dolby Theatre auditorium.
It would turn out to be temporary. After a short protest, security brought her back to her seat about five to 10 minutes later. [THR]

Blatant publicity stunt? A clever way to make people think of Paperman‘s producers as people and not as a giant, faceless, evil corporation (Disney)? Maybe, but it was cute, and it worked, and when you’re making short films, it doesn’t take much to separate you from the other guys. Let’s not forget why Academy members voted for Paperman in the first place. Here’s what an anonymous Academy voter had to say about that part of his ballot when The Hollywood Reporter talked to him as he was filling it out last week:

Watch Disney’s Oscar-Nominated Short, Paperman

Written by Vince Mancini / 01.31.13

Disney just released their Oscar-nominated animated short, Paperman, on YouTube, which seems like a great place for a short film.

A blend of hand-drawn animation and computer graphics, Paperman is set in a stylized mid-century Manhattan. It deals with the star-crossed love of two office workers, and how a pile of papers brings them together. Disney released the video on YouTube late Tuesday.

The short is drenched in nostalgia — not least because of our increasingly paperless offices. (Throwing your laptop out of the window doesn’t quite have the same airborne effect.) But the seamless hand-drawn and computer combo — created by a group of just 12 artists and first-time director John Kahrs — is something new in the world. [Mashable]
