Notes from the Scott Pilgrim Comic-Con Panel

I skipped The Expendables panel in favor of the much less cluster-humpy Children’s Hospital panel yesterday, which was scheduled to end at 6:00 (it was awesome, more on that in a bit).  That was the same time the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World panel was scheduled to start.  I figured I wouldn’t get in, but after I cut in line in front of some disabled kids, I managed to get inside just as it was starting.  That’s right, crippies, these legs do run.

My first thought once I was inside: holy crap this is a big room.  I did not know they made rooms this big.  I’m not sure I could’ve been further from the action had I been in the nosebleed seats of the Rose Bowl and Edgar Wright the coin they flip at the 50-yard line.  I’m not exaggerating.  This is with the camera zoomed in a bit in order to see the stage.

Allegedly, that very very small speck at the center of the frame is Edgar Wright.

Scott Pilgrim spawns Double Dragon-style video game

06.15.10 Written by Vince Mancini

UPDATE: YouTube version attached below if you’re having trouble with this player.

G4 has the trailer for the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World video game.  That’s right, a movie based on a graphic novel with the look of a video game is now getting a video game based on the movie. I guess that makes sense. As you can see, the game has a very retro, Legend of Zelda-meets-Double-Dragon vibe, even though it’s supposedly for Playstation 3 and XBox 360. Obviously, you get to play as Scott Pilgrim, battling Ramona’s seven evil exes and blah blah blah.

What I don’t understand about this project is why, when Ramona is such a hip indie chick who dyes her hair and wears glasses on her head, she’d be the type to expect a boyfriend to fight people over her like common Jersey trash.  And if she was attracted to that kind of guy, why she’d date a spindly sweater jockey like Michael Cera.  Then again, she does have seven ex-boyfriends, so she’s clearly a whore.   Jeez, bitch, seven boyfriends?  How old are you, like 45?  Are you a secret dwarf hooker?

Scott Pilgrim uses space-age technology to make Chris Evans likable

Twilight wasn’t the only thing happening at the MTV Movie Awards, there was also the premiere of this new clip from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.  I like Michael Cera, I like Edgar Wright, and I’ve heard the comic is funny, but up until now, all I’d seen from this movie was gimmicky graphics and obnoxious hair.  That said, this was the clip that won me over. Chris Evans plays a-holey movie star ex-boyfriend perfectly and Edgar Wright’s staging is spot on like it was in the last part of Hot Fuzz.  There’s also the line:

“He’s good, right?  Sometimes I let him do the wide shots — when I feel like getting blazed back in my Winny.”

You made me enjoy the guy from Fantastic Four and Push.  Touché, Scott Pilgrim, touché. As long as you don’t try to make Cam Gigandet happen, this could work out between us.

The Scott Pilgrim chick: now with different hair

06.03.10 Written by Vince Mancini

This whole Scott Pilgrim vs. The World thing still seems like a lot of fancy graphics for not much story to me, but I know it’s nerd crack for everyone else.  So here’s the latest TV spot that will play during Glee.  I enjoyed Chris Evans in it.  Other than that, all I took from it is that “bread makes you fat,” and whatserface likes to change her hair color a lot.  Uh, neat?  It’d be great to have a girlfriend who could switch identities to give you a little variety, but it’d be better if one of them wasn’t a sullen indie-rock chick.  She seems like she’d be okay with anal, but thinks shaving her armpits is “too corporate.”  So, pretty much a win-win.

Captain America vs. Captain Lesbian Hair: The new Scott Pilgrim trailer

06.01.10 Written by Vince Mancini

Behold, the new trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, directed by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz), and starring Michael Cera.  Go ahead, get excited.  It’s okay, I know I’m the weird one.  I’m literally the only person on the internet who doesn’t get this.  Is it because I never read the comic book?  That didn’t hurt Watchmen or Kick-Ass.  Anyway, the plot is that Michael Cera and his Bea-Arthur-meets-Justin-Bieber updo fall in love with some chick who has pink hair and wears goggles on her head (had you heard? being a 4-Non-Blondes fanatic is the new wearing 80s sunglasses).  Then he has to fight her seven evil ex-boyfriends (that’s right, seven. clearly she’s a whore.), who include among them Jason Schwartzman with a sword and Chris Evans with a goatee.  And… that’s pretty much it.  Maybe the goatee is an allegory?
