VIDEO: Everything wrong with Looper in three minutes or less

Written by Vince Mancini / 01.15.13

On the heels of their success with “Everything wrong with The Dark Knight Rises,” (1.2 million views and counting) CinemaSins has released a new video, Everything wrong with Looper in three minutes or less. It’s a nice mix of obvious stuff (the Bruce Willis makeup) and stuff hardly anyone noticed, like the special of the day in the diner being “soy steak.” They also call Paul Dano “discount Shia Labeouf,” which is probably true from a salary standpoint, but from a quality standpoint? Paul Dano is definitely in much better movies, but I won’t argue that he can be kind of obnoxious. I guess it’s your classic choice between guy who’s okay in bad movies vs. guy who’s not that great in good movies. (Excluding Transformers 3, in which LaBeef was a supernova of obnoxiousness). Anyway, something to discuss.

Some of these “sins” are valid – especially the body-disposal thing – others, not so much. Like the quick-cooking steak. Dude, maybe it was soy. You just said the special was soy steak. But I think the major difference between Looper and TDKR (and why I included Looper in my best-of-2012 list but not TDKR)  is that Looper‘s “holes” were usually cutesy (often overtly so) ways to get to larger questions, whereas The Dark Knight Rises was mostly just an artful collection of holes. Unlike your mother, a particularly inartful collection of holes, covered in crabs and living in a trailer. Discuss.

Relevant. Newsworthy. Important.

Your Mid-Week Guide To DVD And Streaming: Clint Eastwood Has Total Recall Of The Last 10 Years

Written by Morton Salt / 12.18.12

I bet that jacket is super noisy.

Well friends, it’s an absolutely crazy time for new DVDs.  With both Christmas and New Year’s Day falling on Tuesdays, the whole Tuesday release schedule has been messed up. We’ve got a ton of movies coming out today, but there’s also a handful coming out this Friday, but don’t worry because I’m covering all of them.  Besides Total Recall and the latest Clint Eastwood flick (as an actor if not director), we’ve got flicks with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Richard Gere.  We’ve got Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey’s ass.  There’s the latest Resident Evil flick, that movie about college singing groups, and so much more.  There’s sleepwalkers and motocross bikers and paralyzed guitarists.  We’ve even got  evil robots and the latest flick from Spike Lee!

The DVDs:
Total Recall
Trouble With The Curve
Premium Rush
-available Friday, 12/21
Arbitrage
-available Friday, 12/21
Killer Joe
-available Friday, 12/21
10 Years
Resident Evil: Retribution
-available Friday, 12/21
Pitch Perfect
Liberal Arts
The Good Doctor
Sleepwalk With Me
Red Hook Summer
-available Friday, 12/21
Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
Bro’
Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet
Forced To Fight
Fred & Vinnie
The Frozen
The New Republic
Android Insurrection

Streaming: Check out your choices here.

Holy cow, that’s a lot of movies hitting DVD this week. But wait, there’s more! Three flicks have decided to buck the trend of coming out when people are actually shopping, so here’s a quick breakdown of the three movies coming out in the next two weeks as well:  The people behind the abysmally reviewed Bradley Cooper flick, The Words, have tried to bury it by releasing it on Monday, December 24.  They are right to do it, and we should honor their desire to have their movie forgotten.  Instead of seeing that,  hold out for another week until Monday, December 31st.  New Year’s Eve sees the release of Looper. I thought it was great, and Vince’s review gave it an ‘A-’.  If that isn’t your cup of tea, Cosmopolis comes out on New Year’s Day. Vince’s review gave it a ‘C’, but it’s from David Cronenberg, who is awesome, so who gives a f*ck what Vince says?  He hates everything, Looper excluded. If your New Year’s resolution is to watch less DVDs, click on that streaming link above to go straight to your Netflix resolution loophole, but to be honest, you’ve chosen a very strange resolution, and you could still read about the DVDs, even if you never plan on watching them.  Hell, I don’t plan on watching most of them either. The Looper Timeline Infographic

Written by Vince Mancini / 10.09.12

No, this isn't the infographic, that's after the jump.

Looper is a film about time travel, whose plot is, by design, unstuck from the constraints of linear time and normal cause and effect. We humans are largely incapable of fathoming the nature of cause and effect in a circular universe of infinite dimensions, and some of the best parts of Looper are the tongue-in-cheek demands that the audience stop trying to understand it, because it’s impossible. “We’d be here all day making diagrams with straws!”

But of course, with any popular movie, while it’s not necessary, it’s fun to try to create that proverbial straw diagram. The closest I ever came to understanding time travel was hooking up a video camera to the TV and filming myself watching myself masturbate watching myself masturbate watching myself- MIND EXPLOSION! DINOSAUR ATTACK! Luckily, there are people at Wired much smarter than me who can handle such things. Spoilery Looper plot infographic below.

Listen on the player above, or download this week’s episode as an mp3 here (right-click, “save as.”)

We’ve had a huge spike in our Frotcast downloads that started about a week ago. I don’t know exactly know where it came from, but welcome, new listeners, we’ll do our best to keep you. This week, we bloop in

Ufford adds:

A doctor I know got forwarded the buttchugging article, and he wrote: Reminds me of a patient who frequently went to an ER with bad urinary tract infections. He had been emptying his bladder, then using a catheter to fill his bladder with wine, and was performing as a ‘human wine dispenser’ at a bar. Nice.

Anyway, listen, love, laugh, share, and come to the Live Show in Chicago, Presented by Tall Tale Productions.

5-Second Films Does Looper

Written by AMB / 10.02.12

Here’s 5-Second Films take on Looper, Pooper. “Triple-ply max comfort aloe vera toilet paper has been invented. But 30 years from now, it will have been outlawed. It will be used only by the criminal underworld when they’re out of the normal stuff and need an uncommonly soothing substitute.” I could’ve used a fart in there, but I’ll accept it. [5SecondFilms]
