GRR, FOOTBALL METAPHOR!

04.08.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Bestweekever created this helpful compilation in order to bring it to your attention that Leatherheads fumbled this weekend.  It was an obvious metaphor, but that didn’t stop anyone from re-using it, because it was just too sexy.

In their defense, Concussions force ‘Leatherheads’ into early retirement; later killed by brain tumor resulting from prolonged HGH abuse probably didn’t fit in the banner box.

BOX OFFICE CRAP UP: SHOULDA PUNTED

04.07.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Leatherheads and pretty much everything else tanked this weekend, with nothing grossing more than $20 million on the worst weekend of 2008.

21 stayed on top with $15.1 million, Leatherheads debuted at number 2 with $13.4, Nim’s Island earned $13.3, followed by Horton Hears a Who at $9.1, and The Ruins with $7.8.

Leatherheads didn’t look that great, but doesn’t deserve the bomb reputation when so many other turds are so much worse.  Poor Clooney, it must suck to be a fabulously wealthy model-banging international playboy with a dark eyes, a soothing voice, and masculine features that only improve with age.  Uh, I mean, GRR, FOOTBALL MOVIES!  …I bet his skin smells really nice.

WEEKEND PREVIEW FARTACULAR

04.04.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Opening this weekend:

Leatherheads
I’m pretty sure their football team is screwed.  One black dude?  And he’s nowhere near the ball?  Back to the drawing board, fellas.  Little known fact: playing football without a facemask can give you a black right eye, but never a broken nose.  I can’t decide, does Clooney look more like a member of Our Gang or Spuds MacKenzie?

The Ruins
Why the hell do they keep making these?  Seriously.

Shine a Light
A Martin-Scorsese-directed Rolling Stones concert.  On the one hand, you can see a Stones concert for eleven bucks instead of $300.  On the other, does anyone else not vomit when they see this picture?  First off, I could do without a 60-year-old man’s bare midriff.  Secondly, he looks like the gremlin from Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.  Aaarrggggh, he’s on the wing!!!

My Blueberry Nights
Wong Kar-Wai’s English language debut, starring Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz, and Jude Law.  The fact that the trailer is boring and pretentious really doesn’t give me high hopes for the actual movie.

Sex and Death 101
Sounds like a class at the FilmDrunk school of joke writing.  Written and directed by Daniel Waters of Heathers fame, IT WILL COMB YOU OVER!

DOGS CAN’T PLAY FOOTBALL LOL!

01.31.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Just in time for Super Bowl weekend, George Clooney’s Leatherheads has a poster. It’s Clooney’s third film as a director, after Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (a solid movie written by the genius Charlie Kaufman) and Good Night and Good Luck (a snooze fest the critics had a big circle jerk over).  It opens April 4th (trailer here).

The movie looks like it has potential, but I’m pretty sure their football team is screwed.  One black dude?  And he’s nowhere near the ball?  Back to the drawing board, fellas.

GRRR, FOOTBALL: ‘LEATHERHEADS’ TRAILER

12.17.07 Written by Vince Mancini

Watch the Higher Res version at Yahoo!

Ever wonder what it’d be like if you took a football version of Bull Durham or Slap Shot, and made an homage to His Girl Friday?  You’ll find out when Leatherheads, directed by George Clooney and starring Clooney, John Krasinsky from the Office and Reneé Zellweger hits theaters in April.  Expect snappy dialogue and sweet haircuts.

I see this as sort of a rubber match for Clooney as a director.  The Charlie Kaufman-scripted Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was solid, if perhaps not all it could’ve been.  Meanwhile, the critically acclaimed Good Night and Good Luck was about as interesting as listening to Jessica Alba talk.

But no matter what happens, he’ll always have a good chin.  And that’s something to be proud of, especially when you’re putting on pillowcases.
