Kill Bill and the movies that inspired it, side by side

Kill-Bill-Influences

Most people already knew Quentin Tarantino borrowed heavily from the 70s B-movies he grew up on when he was making Kill Bill, but I doubt many of us knew the full extent of it as laid out in this video [created by RobGWilson here].  Mostly because a video like this requires a ridiculous amount of work, and yo, I got stuff to do (*bedazzles cat sweater, nods approvingly*).  In any case, it’s interesting.  Some of the influences are uncanny to the point that it’s almost disappointing — I admit I didn’t realize the sunglass joke above was a reference to the original Gone in 60 Seconds — others, not so much.  I don’t really think you can claim ownership of a shot of someone filling up a syringe, for instance, that just seems obvious.  The video’s also a bit bittersweet, with all the shots of the dearly departed David Carradine in his last iconic role.  I get a little choked up every time I see him.

(*pantomimes “gag gag, wank wank” to make sure everyone got the joke, smokes pipe*)

QUENTIN TARANTINO FIELDS AN AVATARD QUESTION

02.08.10 Written by Vince Mancini

Jeff Wells recently posted a few clips from a filmmaker’s panel at the Santa Barbara Film Festival in which Quentin Tarantino is his normal ball of coked-up energy, while Hangover/Old School-director Todd Phillips sits off to the side looking like he’s just here for the gang bang.  Someone asked Tarantino about Avatar, because that’s the thing to do now:quentin-tarantino-got your nose

[Question from the audience]: Avatar is indeed a game-changer.  Do you think you will ever leave your genre-oriented directing and try a movie that is technologically more arresting?

Tarantino: What, just because he did it in 3D?  [laughter] I’ll tell you what would’ve been a game changer as far as I was concerned, if I had seen Avatar before I’d made Kill Bill.  One of the things I was thinking, was when I did Kill Bill, I had these grandiose visions in my head, of the experience of watching the movie, and I actually wanted it to be more like being on a ride.  …I don’t think I did that.  It wasn’t quite the ride I had envisioned at my most grandiose.  And when I saw Avatar, I was like, ‘That’s the ride!’

I think it would’ve been better if he’d just left it at, “What, just because he did it in 3D?”  What kind of prick asks that kind of question, anyway?  You ask Werner Herzog a question like that, he’s liable to carve out your larynx and eat it.  Seriously, I’ve seen him do it.

DAVID CARRADINE VS. BLACK DYNAMITE

06.05.09 Written by Vince Mancini

It was probably a little unfair of me to skip all the good stuff David Carradine did and go straight to the ropes-tied-around-the-genitals-in-Bangkok jokes.  As penance, here’s a deleted scene from Kill Bill in which Carradine has an awesome sword fight with Michael Jai White, aka Black Dynamite.  White’s scenes got cut from Kill Bill, probably because he tried to talk like The Stath the whole time.  “Oi, todaiy’s da day you doy, donnit.  Now ‘and me moy sword, ya worfless cunts.”

…Wow, this whole “tribute post” idea got away from me pretty fast, didn’t it.  Anyway, R.I.P., homey.  (*pours out some KY on the ground*)

DAVID CARRADINE IS DEAD

06.04.09 Written by Vince Mancini

This just broke a few minutes ago so not much is known yet, but what’s confirmed is that Kill Bill star David Carradine was found dead at the age of 73 in his hotel room in Bangkok.

Carradine, 73, was there to shoot a new movie, his agent said. His agent confirmed his death this morning, saying the actor had been in great spirits. He said he believed Carradine died of natural causes. [ABC7]

Hmmm… I don’t know if you can call it “natural causes” if the guy was still working and looked great the day before.  It sounds suspicious  My theory is that Bangkok Dangerous.  What, too soon?  Anyway, R.I.P., you magnificent bastard.  While you were a cinematic legend, my epitaph will read, “He couldn’t resist the easy jokes.”

NOW WITH MORE BOOBS!!1ONE!!1!

11.05.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Howdy, folks.  Sorry for the slow down in posting this afternoon, things were hectic.  And by hectic, I mean… hungover.  Anyway, my apology, like all good apologies, comes in the way of boobs.  This lovely young lass painted like the Bride from Kill Bill is Rhian Sugden, and the pictures come from The London Paper. I don’t know why they aren’t bigger.  The people that run The London Paper are just dicks, apparently.

This is a different young lady I found on Flickr.  She has great fashion sense, I think.
