JOURNEY SINGER LOVES N-BOMBS

StevePerryRobocop-Silverman(When the lights go down in the city… Robocop goes to work.)

In a recent interview, Sarah Silverman shared a story about Journey lead singer Steve Perry, and let’s just say it has a lot in common with that story about what Oliver Stone supposedly said about Scarface.  Basically, if you’ve ever sung “Don’t Stop Believin’” at karaoke, you are a virulent, hate-filled racist.

In an interview with Playboy set to hit newsstands tomorrow, comedian Sarah Silverman responds to questions about her provocative brand of humor by telling a story about how “the onetime lead singer of a very popular band from the 1980s” came up to her after a show and said, “You’re my favorite comedian. You have the best n*gger jokes.” Silverman didn’t outright name Journey’s Steve Perry, but she added, “I’ll just say this: After that, I stopped believin’.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Perry predictably denied Silverman’s version of the story.

“I walked up to her after the show and I said, ‘I can’t believe that somehow you seem to be getting away with all these slurs and the n-word, I just can’t believe how you’re doing this,’ and I looked at my friend and I said, ‘I can’t believe how she’s getting away with this,’ and she looked at me and kind of smiled. It wasn’t like I was condemning her or condoning her, it was just that I can’t believe how somehow creatively she was making everybody in that club of all colors and all ethnic backgrounds laugh. That’s what it was.” [Rolling Stone]

Perry later added, “My friend was black, did I mention that?  Seriously, a close, personal friend. We’re like brothers. Wait, no, that’s not what I meant to say…”

Anyway, I’m sure this post will garner plenty of “Sarah Silverman sucks” comments.  Which I don’t really get.  I can understand not being familiar with her stand up, and her show is an acquired taste, but have you not seen Jesus is Magic?  I dunno, anyone who sings a song with the line “You can’t put your arms around a dirty gangbang cum shot,” is okay in my book.  I guess I’m old fashioned like that.

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS

Written by Vince Mancini / 06.17.09

Here’s a homemade music video of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin,” starring Ellen Page, Alia Shawkat (aka Maeby Funke from Arrested Development), and uh, some fat guy.  Apparently it’s dedicated to Page’s mother Martha (??), and if nothing else proves the stars’ ability to annoyingly sing a half step behind the beat of the song. Anyway, I’m not sure what the point of this was.  Maybe it was to see whether they could finally play out “Don’t Stop Believin,” which has been able to maintain semi-ironic popularity for an absurdly long time now.  And speaking of semi-ironic, Ellen Page is rocking both a Che hat AND a keffiyah scarf, which is like +20 hipster points. I’ve heard if you get 25 you can redeem them for getting knocked off your long skateboard.

I got through two minutes.  See how far you can get!

JOURNEY: AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH

Written by Vince Mancini / 07.23.08

Those geniuses at Black20 have done it again. This is their trailer for Journey at the Center of the Earth. Parody or not, it’s still the greatest thing Brendan Fraser’s ever done.  And while we’re on the subject of Journey, can we just pause for a moment to analyze the lyrics?

Streetlights, people.  Livin’ just to find emotion.

I can not even fathom the amount of balls it took to write that with a straight face, let alone perform it live.  I’ll keep believin all right.

HARRY POTTER GETS STONED TO DEATH

Written by Vince Mancini / 01.02.08

Respect the eyebrows, bitch.

No, this isn’t an update about the next Harold and Kumar movie, but God I wish it was.

It’s actually about Daniel Radcliffe beating out Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom for the coveted title World’s Manliest Pussy role of photojournalist Dan Eldon.

The movie, titled Journey [like every unoriginal A-hole's favorite band!], will focus on the Somalian civil war. Eldon was one of four journalists who found themselves in Somalia at the time of the uprising and wound up stoned to death in 1993. The movie is based on a compilation of Eldon’s journals. [CinemaBlend]

Dan Eldon’s Journal, Day 1: Plane trip sucked, landing rough, Africa is hella hot.  Boy, I hope I don’t get stoned to death – that would be super lame!

Eldon’s mother, Kathy, told the press that she felt Radcliffe was the perfect choice for the role to play her son because ”Dan was a boy emerging into manhood.”

Yeah, plus they’re both named Dan. Still, they should’ve cast me. It was just last week that I totally almost grew a sideburn.  I’m a veritable fountain (mountain?) of testosterone. I ejaculate body hair.  Call me ladies.
