New Super 8 Trailer Hits Twitter

03.11.11 Written by Burnsy

Super 8

The latest trailer for the JJ Abrams-directed and Steven Spielberg-produced Super 8 was revealed today, as the movie’s Twitter page delivered a link to a Twitvid page, bringing us to an all-time high for Twitter references in an opening sentence. The trailer gives us a glimpse of a simpler time in America, as a group of pre-teen friends sets out to make their own movie. Nowadays it would, of course, be a sex tape.

According to the film’s synopsis:

“In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.”

Spoiler alert: It’s Kirstie Alley naked.

Trailer after the jump…

Jeremy Renner joins Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible IV

08.26.10 Written by Vince Mancini

Tom-Cruise-Jeremy_renner

In a desperate hope that people might starting giving a sh*t about the franchise, Paramount has cast The Hurt Locker‘s Jeremy Renner in Mission Impossible IV.  It shoots in the fall with Brad Bird (Ratatouille, The Incredibles) directing and JJ Abrams producing.  Jeez, imagine if we could get this level of talent working on something that wasn’t a fourth sequel to an adaptation of a 60s TV show, huh?

Renner will star alongside Tom Cruise in the fourth installment of a franchise that will begin production in the fall. It is the second major role for Renner coming out of his  turn as the reckless explosives specialist in the Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker. Renner also will star in Marvel Studios’ The Avengers, playing the role of Hawkeye. Renner will next be seen in the Ben Affleck-directed The Town, the GK Films-produced drama that Warner Bros opens September 17.

Paramount has struggled to find the right co-star to play an operative opposite Cruise, and one factor was to selecting an actor who could potentially carry the series down the line, should Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character not continue to be the emphasis. [Deadline]

“Down the line”?  Jesus christ, you’ve already got four of them.  How many franchises produced good movies after the fourth?  The only one I can think of is Phattys Rhymes and Dimes, and as good as Jeremy Renner is, he’s no Brian Pumper.  For his part, Cruise is said to be delighted by the casting of Renner (who was “outed” by the National Enquirer earlier this year), inviting his new co-star out to watch the latest matches of American football at the local tavern, as long as there aren’t any gays in there.

JJ Abrams working on a diamond heist movie

05.21.10 Written by Vince Mancini

cat-burglar

I love movies about stealing, probably because I’m half Mexican (by marriage).  Which is why I’m excited to report that JJ Abrams, Professor Lens Flare himself, is producing a film about the World’s Biggest Diamond Heist, based on a Wired article written by Josh “Regular Name” Davis.  Abrams and Paramount have hired Phil Alden Robinson to adapt the story, who hasn’t done much since writing Sneakers and Field of Dreams in the early 90s.

The article, the rights to which Paramount acquired in March 2009, described the true story of an unprecedented diamond heist in Antwerp, Belgium, and the crew that pulled it off. In early 2003, a small group of Italian thieves circumvented 10 layers of security to access a vault beneath the Antwerp Diamond Center and make off with a purported $100 million in diamonds, gold and jewelry (the actual value remains a mystery).
During a six-year span, Davis scored a series of interviews with the ringleader, incarcerated in a Belgian prison, who finally divulged how it was done. Davis acquired the subject’s life rights in the process. [HeatVision]

Call me crazy, but when I think “successful heist” I don’t think “in jail for the last six years.”  I wonder what got them busted.  I bet they tried to pull the old pass-off-a-character-who-looks-like-Julia-Roberts-as-Julia-Roberts trick.  Based on what I know from movies, robbers are always trying to pull that one.

Super 8 now officially online, thtill thuper thecret

05.11.10 Written by Vince Mancini

Super8-trailer

I posted the bootleg version of JJ Abrams’ teaser for Super 8 last week, and now the official version is online.  So far we know that it was written and is being directed by Abrams with Steven Spielberg producing, it’s not a Cloverfield sequel, it’s set in 1979, and it’s supposedly an homage to 70s and 80s Spielberg films like E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.  The studio hasn’t provided a synopsis for the trailer, and all it shows us is a pick-up truck crash into a train, which was carrying some mysterious cargo that’s now struggling to get out.  I suppose it asks the proverbial question, “WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!? WHAT’S IN THE BOOX?!?”

Knowing JJ Abrams, I bet they open it up and POOF.  Biggest got damned lens flare you ever saw.
