Trailer for Hall Pass, the latest from the Farrelly Brothers

Written by Vince Mancini / 11.05.10

The Farrelly Brothers had an impressive string of movies I thought were really funny back in the 90s (Kingpin, Dumb and Dumber, Something About Mary, the script for the forgotten and underrated Outside Providence).   I’m not sure why their style of comedy doesn’t work anymore, exactly, but it’s hard to watch them try to force that same kind of movie past its sell-by date over and over again (Heartbreak Kid, anyone?).  Anyway, this one’s called Hall Pass, and it stars Owen Wilson and the eminently likable Jason Sudeikis as guys whose wives give them a week off from their marriage to do whatever they want.   They get so excited that they start eating pot brownies and wearing motorcycle helmets indoors like two 13-year-olds who’ve never heard of a prostitute.

If Gran Torino was about doin’ chicks

Douglas-Solitary-Man

I know the man-child thing is all the rage these days, especially for the vocationally pantless like me,  but I’ll be honest, it feels good to be excited about a trailer that doesn’t feature people in spandex shooting guns for once.  This one’s called A Solitary Man, featuring a cast of chicks nerds want to bang of all ages (Jenna Fischer, Mary Louise-Parker, Olivia Thirlby), not to mention Michael Douglas, Danny DeVito, Susan Sarandon, and Jesse Eisenberg, with direction by the guys who wrote Rounders.  Excited yet?  Here, try this cocaine.

JOHN C. REILLY VS. STIFLER

Written by Vince Mancini / 05.09.08

Maaaaaake oooooouuuuuut

WATCH THE TRAILER FOR THE PROMOTION AFTER THE JUMP

The Promotion stars John C. Reilly and the Stiffmeister as two assistant managers of a corporate grocery store vying for the same job.  It also has Jenna Fischer reprising her role as Cutie McPretty and one of the better SNL castmembers, Fred Armisen.

Written and directed by Steve Conrad, who previously wrote The Pursuit of Happyness and The Weather Man, The Promotion premiered to mixed reviews at SXSW.  And by mixed I mean people said everything from “Add watching "The Promotion" to the Geneva Conventions’ list of humanitarian abuses,” to “a fantastic little comedy, filled with all sorts of weird little moments and strange diversions.”

I haven’t seen it, but I will say this: John C. Reilly really looks like a Shar Pei. And by that I mean I want to take him home and snuggle.  Uh, I mean, I want him to lick peanut butter off my nuts. Wait, no, I mean I want him to, uh, keep me company.  …I’m so lonely.

Playback was choppy for me on this clip – if it’s not working right, you can also watch it here
