Friday Free For All: AC/DC + Ghostbusters = Thunderbusters

10.01.10 Written by Vince Mancini

It goes without saying that AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” is one of the most rocking song intros of all time.  The first time I heard it, I was just a young prep school honor student with a sensible haircut and dreams of one day becoming a banker.  Two minutes into Angus Young’s searing guitar licks, I was knocking over a liquor store with a topless biker chick named Raspy.  In all the time since, one thing I never wondered was what Thunderstruck would sound like mashed up with Ray Parker Jr.’s Ghostbusters theme (which is basically a rip off of Huey Lewis’ “I Want a New Drug”*).  Neverless, someone at Wax Audio wondered for me, the result is “Thunderbusters”. And now I know what the soundtrack to Gary Busey’s inner monologue sounds like.

Sidenote: Who do you think looks stinkier, Brian Johnson or Lemmy from Motörhead?  And before you answer, you have to give Johnson a three liver-spot handicap.  Discuss. …Okay, probably still Lemmy. What about Brian Johnson and both Young brothers combined?

*Lewis sued, they settled out of court, and Lewis discussed the incident on Behind the Music, for which Parker then sued Lewis for breaching a confidentiality agreement.  What, no “no tagbacks” rule?

Improv Everywhere’s Ghostbusters stunt at NYPL

05.18.10 Written by Vince Mancini

Improv Everywhere are famous for their occasionally funny stunts (see also: spontaneous musicals, no pants subway ride) that generally involve getting strangers to pay attention to them.  Haha, I love you, theater kids.  Anyway, their latest stunt involved staging a Ghostbusters scene at the New York Public Library, the setting of the first scene in the original Ghostbusters.

The New York Public Library approached us about a month ago and asked if we would want to stage an Improv Everywhere mission on their property. The library is facing serious budget cuts, and they thought having us do something awesome there might serve to remind people of how great the NYPL is. We couldn’t say no to the opportunity to do something in their gorgeous, 100 year-old Rose Main Reading Room. [ImprovEverywhere]

It’s a good thing the library staff was in on it.  If I saw that many chicks in burkas run up, I probably would’ve assumed it was a terrorist attack and maced somebody.  Nonetheless, the people there seemed to genuinely enjoy the show.  Except for this guy, who was busy finishing a text:

I heard a couple of the hobos there enjoyed it so much they almost didn’t finish masturbating.

THIS GUY IS A TRUE TALENT, DORK

10.23.09 Written by Vince Mancini

(“I WOULDN’T LET THIS GUY NEAR MY KIDS.”)

What would you consider super nerdy?  Slavish devotion to a movie that came out 25 years ago?  Singing the theme of said movie a capella?  How about singing all the musical parts to that movie theme a capella, then filming yourself while you do it and making a multi-track video of the whole event?  Yep, pretty nerdy, Matt Mulholland, pretty nerdy.  Mouth instruments are only cool if you’re Bobby McFerrin, or me playing 70s-porn-themed mouth bass to get the ladies in the mood.  Combine that with a lip bite and some slow hip thrusts and the panties just disintegrate, trust me.
