FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS: TOO MANY DICKS

Written by Vince Mancini / 02.16.09

Last night’s episode of Flight of the Conchords was directed by Michel Gondry (director of Eternal Sunshine, Be Kind Rewind, and others). After the jump, you can watch the first musical number, “Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor.” As you can imagine, Gondry’s penchant for surrealistic special effects is a nice complement to the Conchords’ musically… uh… literal… um… Well anyway, it’s good.  As for the song’s message, I normally have the opposite problem.  Nothing against dancing with women, they just lack the upper-body strength necessary for the moves I like to try.

COMMENTS OF THE WEEK: FOTC EDITION

Written by Vince Mancini / 01.12.09

Morning, FilmDrunkards.  Today must be your lucky day, because I’ve got a Flight of the Conchords prize pack to give away (unless you also just found out you have cancer, in which case the luck thing probably evens out).  The prize pack includes season 1 of FOTC on DVD, an FOTC Notebook, FOTC guitar picks, FOTC posters and FOTC postcards.  Season 2 premieres next Sunday at 10 ET (though you can also watch it for free online here), and the FOTC lipdub contest is still accepting entries here.

As always, the way this works is, when a commenter makes a comment worthy of recognition, YOU nominate it by copy and pasting it in the comments section of this post.  I’LL pick the winner from among the nominees next Sunday/Monday. The winner gets a sweet prize.  (FYI, the nomination thread is always linked in the ABOUT section).

And on to the runners up…

WATCH NEW FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS FREE

Written by Vince Mancini / 12.17.08

I’ve got the first episode of Flight of the Conchords’ new season available for free after the jump, even though it won’t be on TV until January 18th.  I’m just really f-cking cool like that.  If you’ve never seen Flight of the Conchords, it’s an HBO show about the New Zealand singing sensation… uh, Flight of Conchords.  Think Tenacious D, but skinnier and much, much drier.  HBO has a pretty good track record when it comes to breaking new comedies – Ali G, Summer Heights High… pretty much everything except Little Britain, which makes me want to self-immolate.  Hey, England, you can have Tracey Ullman back too.  Anyway, check it out.  And if your boss gives you any shit, just tell her* to f-ck off.  It’s December.  Nobody works in December.

THIS WILL BE THE WORLD’S WHITEST MOVIE

Written by Vince Mancini / 10.24.08

After the jump, I’ve got a brand new promotional clip from Gentleman Broncos, starring Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords.  To refresh your memory, Gentleman Broncos comes from Jared and Jerusha Hess, the mormon husband and wife filmmaking team behind Napoleon Dynamite.  Clement plays Dr. Ronald Chevalier, a fantasy novelist.  In this clip, he describes his creative process:

“To inspire myself, I turn to myself, and my own original compositions. This chord conjures up a family of electronic dogs, scavenging for a home. This suggests a planet, with 50 moons.  This, an android, who discovers feelings.”

In theory I know I should find this funny, but good god is it dry.  It almost makes me wish someone would get hit in the nuts, or a cross-dressing black guy in a fat suit would chase someone around with a rolling pin.  Oh lawdy, chile, I done tripped an’ fell on mah sweet potata pie, now mah britches is ruined!

GENTLEMEN BRONCOS VIRAL SITE IS KIND OF SWEET

Written by Vince Mancini / 08.07.08

Gentlemen Broncos, the upcoming movie from Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, "follows a high school outcast who’s an aspiring fantasy author. He attends a fantasy convention to show off his work and finds his supposed masterpiece – ‘Yeast Lords’ – ripped off by legendary novelist Ronald Chevalier, who has turned desperate for ideas."

Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords  ("New Zealand: Why not?") plays Chevalier, and the above video is from his viral site, RonaldChevalier.com.  An excerpt:

A Cluster Award-winning, published author since the age of 13, Dr.Chevalier’s robust body of work includes titles such as Cyborg Harpies, Brain Cream, and the all new, completely original novel Brutus & Balzaak.
Dr. Chevalier’s talents extend into such varied spheres as the sciences, arts. His original painted works have received various accolades within the “Art World”, and he’s revolutionized the genre of “Visitation Portraiture”.

This movie hasn’t even finished shooting yet and already has a viral site.  It seems like every movie has a viral site these days.  These viral sites have really been spreading like… uh, wildfire.
