Johnny Depp can’t stop here, this is hawk country!

Written by Vince Mancini / 06.29.10

As promised this morning when I posted the poster, here’s the full trailer for Rango, from Paramount Pictures, starring the voice of Johnny Depp.  Normally I couldn’t care less about the dumb movies your annoying wiener kids drag you to, but I really like the look of the animation in this one.  Plus I enjoy it when every character has an over-the-top Mexican accent. Reminds me of junior high.

The trailer immediately made me think of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but I wondered if I was making too much of it — is there really a connection beyond Johnny Depp in a Hawaiian shirt in the desert? Then I watched it again and I caught the almost subliminal shot (it’s only a few frames) in which the filmmaker’s clearly reference it themselves.

Fear-And-Loathing-Rango

Anyway, I love a good Hunter S. Thompson reference in a children’s film.

“Daddy, daddy, what’s Fear and Loathing?”

“Oh, it’s just a book about a guy who drives out to Las Vegas in search of the American Dream.”

“Does he find it?”

“Well, not really, but he’s awesome and does lots of drugs.”

A MAN IN THE DEPTHS OF AN ETHER BINGE

Written by Vince Mancini / 10.16.09

“There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge.
It makes you behave like the village drunkard in some early Irish novel.  Total loss of all basic motor skills, blurred vision, no balance, numb tongue — the mind recoils in horror, unable to communicate with the spinal column.  Which is interesting, because you can actually watch yourself behaving in this terrible way, but you can’t control it.”

This guy is officially the official mascot of FilmDrunk.  Note the time on the security cam tape: it’s ten in the morning.  Gotta love a guy who has to set an alarm clock to get hammered.

Hey!  What are you doing over there?
…Juss partyin, man. (*falls through table*)

TIM BURTON CASTS SOME BITCH

Written by Vince Mancini / 07.24.08

Hi!

Tim Burton has cast Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, who looks like a giraffe I’d like to bone and is apparently on In Treatment, in his adaptation of Alice In Wonderland for Disney.

The film, based on a script by Linda Woolverton ("The Lion King"), will be produced by longtime Burton collaborator Richard Zanuck, former Disney chairman Joe Roth and Jennifer and Suzanne Todd. It will be shot with live-action and performance-capture footage and presented in Disney Digital 3-D. Disney creative executive Jason Reed will oversee the project, set to begin principal photography in November. [Hollywood Reporter]

I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to read "Wasikowska" without a question mark on the end.  In any case, I can only hope she’s preparing for her role by listening to Jefferson Airplane in the tub while Johnny Depp throws grapefruits at her head.
