Danny Glover Defends Mel Gibson

01.27.11 Written by Danger Guerrero

Danny Glover and Mel Gi

Danny Glover is at Sundance, and was asked about his feelings on Mel Gibson’s recent troubles. And by “troubles,” I mean “repeated use of racial and ethnic slurs, and drunk driving arrests, and threatening to kill his wife and burn down their house, and assaulting her, and starring in a movie about a beaver puppet.” Sum it up, MTV.

Glover (who was in Park City to promote his movie “Black Power Mixtape”) said of Gibson, “I love Mel. That’s my friend.” Glover also shared that he and Gibson (who he called “a very generous man” who is “always searching for meaning in his life”) have been in touch over this last tumultuous year and that at a recent memorial in Los Angeles, “We ran up and hugged each other.”

The 64-year-old star refused to talk about the issues that got Gibson into hot water, saying only, “I can’t comment on that. I only know what I know.” But Glover summed it up this way: “He’s had tough times. We’ve all had tough times.”

I agree. We have all had tough times. I mean, just the other day I was all stressed out about this paper I’m working on for class, and was starting to get a little down. So I drank a bottle of Jameson, walked into the library, and really gave it to the Jews. Just laid into them. Or this other time, a female barista put sugar in my Ethiopan roast. SUGAR. I cracked her in the face, jumped up on a table, and told everyone I was going to burn the building down. But, naturally, only after she blew me. And who can forget the time I became so wealthy that I never had to worry about money again like the vast majority of the population does and my girlfriend put too much starch in my shirt, so I called her on the phone and told her I hoped she got “raped by a pack of [n-word]‘s”?

Life is hard.

DANNY GLOVER PLAYS AHAB IN MOBY DICK WITH DRAGONS

02.23.10 Written by Vince Mancini

DannyGlover-Captain Ahab DragonQuest

ACTUAL PLOT: Danny Glover plays Captain Ahab opposite Vinnie Jones in a retelling of Moby Dick in which the white whale is a dragon. (*Air guitar*)  Seriously though, that’s the plot of the $5 million-budgeted Dragon Fire, and the best part is, we learn all of this through a local TV news report from adorable Utah.  I’ve prepared a rough transcript:

VOICE OVER: “The lights and cameras are shining in Provo this week as cast and crew work on what they hope will be the next box office-smash.  Writers and producers are taking the American classic Moby Dick and putting a fantasy twist to it.”FrenchGuyinaHammock

FRENCH PRODUCER IN A HAMMOCK: “Well, eet’s Moby Dick… weess dragons.”

DANNY GLOVER: “We all know a moral dilemma Moby Dick mumble mumble I seem drunk.

VOICE OVER: Blah blah blah, Danny Glover’s been to Utah before, “But most remember him from the Lethal Weapon movies.”

DANNY GLOVER: Mumble mumble *hiccup* mumble mumble

VOICE OVER:  “But it’s ultimately moviegoers who will decide if dragons does indeed make this timeless classic  more exciting.”

Interesting stuff, John.  Coming up at the top of the hour, the US death toll in Afghanistan passes 1,000 and Sally Roberson of Lehi teaches us how to make lawn sculptures out of old kitty litter scoopings.  Stay tuned.

DANNY GLOVER’S PREDATOR DANCE PARTY

02.17.10 Written by Vince Mancini

Reader Osky recently sent me this clip of some guys dressed up like Predators dancing and hip thrusting for a few minutes before Danny Glover shows up.  After I awoke from my thrust-induced trance, I noticed that their costumes seemed too nice to be homemade and did some digging.

Lionel Douglass, who played one of the Predators in Predator 2, orchestrated this little dance off.  This is, as far as we were able to determine, legitimate, and actually made on the set of Predator 2.  For unknown reasons, it was released to the public only several months ago.  Apparently, Danny Glover makes a brief appearance in this as well. [Source]

I guess it makes a lot more sense that Danny Glover would show up if they were on the set of Predators 2.  Though even before I knew the context, I have to admit that I just sort of accepted his appearance as natural.  I read in my copy of Sheltered Racist magazine that the blacks are crazy about dancing.

DANNY GLOVER POOPS ON TRACY MORGAN’S HAND

12.23.09 Written by Vince Mancini

DannyGloverpoopsTracyMorgan

Below, the first trailer for Death at a Funeral (2010). The original Death at a Funeral came out in 2007, and even though it’s only two years old and in English, they remade it with an American, mostly black cast (Peter Dinklage is in both versions — if not an Oscar, he deserves some kind of Most Valuable Dwarf award).  Wicker Man director Neil LaBute directs the remake.  Alan Tudyk‘s turn as a guy frying on hallucinogens the whole time is taken over by… James Marsden.  The only thing that could save this is lots and lots of Tracy Morgan.  Danny Glover pooping on his hand notwithstanding, it looks like he doesn’t have a huge part. The studio should cut that scene with the scene of J-Lo trying to keep semen from spilling out of her vadge, and then film the audience puking and use that as the promo, Paranormal Activity style.

Hey, did Chris Rock just utter the phrase “bromantically involved?”  Is that because they were both guys or because they’re black?  From the style guide:  Bros = white guys with arm band tats.  Brothers = black dudes.

MARTIN LAWRENCE, A DWARF, & DANNY GLOVER

For the last five or ten years, Hollywood’s been doing this thing where they take a successful foreign movie and remake it in English for people too dumb to read.  Death at a Funeral is the latest twist on that concept, in which they took a film that was already in English and remade it for black people.  Chris Rock is producing, and he hopes it will be at least as popular as the time they remade Stomp the Yard for white people.  Stomp, I believe it was called.
