Literally Every Comic Book Will Be A Movie

Written by Ashley Burns / 07.13.12

There’s a running joke – here and pretty much everywhere else, including Hollywood – that if a comic book exists, it will be turned into a movie. And this was proven way too true by the announcement at Comic Con 2011 that Minds Eye Entertainment, an independent production company in Canada that has made some quality films, was actually going to make a movie version of Captain Canuck, based on the 1975 comic book of the same name about the Canadian super hero.

One year later, Minds Eye is still dead serious, and a Canadian writing veteran has been hired to bring this incredible tale to the big screen for the entire world to appreciate.

Canadian screenwriter Arne Olsen is to adapt Richard Comely’s iconic masked crusader Captain Canuckfor the big screen.

The Captain Canuck franchise has been optioned many times over the years as a possible TV series or movie, most recently by Sinking Ship Entertainment. (Via THR)

Captain Canuck is the story of Tom Evans, a Canadian secret agent granted super powers by aliens in fictional 1993, when Canada is the most powerful country in the world. Like most super heroes, Canuck fought against various enemies that were aiding rogue nations in trying to take over the world. He was also eventually ripped off by Marvel Comics, when they introduced the Canadian super hero team Alpha Flight, but Canuck is indeed the original.

This clearly has the foundation to be one of the funniest movies ever made, if Minds Eye decides to go the goofier comedy route, although based on Olsen’s résumé (Cop and a Half, All Dogs go to Heaven 2, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Red Scorpion) I don’t have the first clue what to expect from this film. Other than it will be very polite.

Three-Boobed Hooker? Total Recall Has It

Written by Ashley Burns / 08.02.11

As Comic Con is nothing more than a distant memory of plain girls becoming exponentially hotter for dressing like comic book characters, there are always some straggler interviews around the interwebs that offer some hidden gems. While it’s not nearly as legit and proper as Vinnie hollering at your boy, C-Tates, Frosty from Collider spent a solid 22 minutes chatting with Len Wiseman, who is the director of the upcoming Total Recall remake with Colin Farrell, but more importantly he’s the dude that makes babies with Kate Beckinsale.

Around the 5:37 mark he gets into the Total Recall stuff, after he discusses his hot wife in Underworld, and he hints at what we’ve all been wondering – Are we gonna see some tri-boobs?

Frosty: “Are there any Easter eggs for the original movie as a nod?”
Len Wiseman: “For sure. And what I did was, after I read the script, I wrote a list out of the things I remembered from Total Recall when I was 15, before I went and watched Total Recall again to see what actually stuck with me.”

Of course he means the three-breasted hooker, because any guy that doesn’t list that as the one thing he remembers from the original classic – that’s right, I’m calling Total Recall a classic – isn’t really a man. But there’s a problem with this great news – Wiseman’s Recall is PG-13. What the hell kind of tri-boob are we going to see in a PG-13 joint?

Don’t worry your precious hearts. Later in the interview, around the 19-minute mark, Wiseman recognizes that there are “different versions of the three-breasted woman” in regard to the eventual director’s cut DVD and Blu-Ray. Thank goodness. I just don’t want to live in an alternate future without bare-breasted mutants.

Doctor Who Brings Us An Extended Fright Night Clip

Written by Ashley Burns / 07.25.11

I tried to find a good image of David Tennant, but I liked this screen grab too much.

Over the weekend, the cast and crew of Fright Night, the remake of the classic 1985 horror film of the same name, hosted a panel at Comic Con, which I’m starting to think is a pretty important event. I wish they advertised it better. Either way, fans were treated to an exclusive extended clip, and to multiply the geek factor immensely, David Tennant set the clip up. Tennant plays supposed vampire expert and TV host Peter Vincent in the new film, but he’s better known as The Doctor from BBC’s Doctor Who series.

In the clip, Vincent is confronted by Punky Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) for the first time, as he needs help in stopping his vampire neighbor, played by Colin Farrell. At least he thinks he’s a vampire. He could just be a lawyer. Ahhh, that’s some good legal humor right there.

Clip after the jump, and there’s plenty of David Tennant in tight leather pants for all you female Doctor Who fans. All two of you.

Robert Rodriguez Is Full Of Secrets

Written by Ashley Burns / 07.22.11

Last night at Comic Con, where Vince was last seen challenging the cast of Glee to a jazz-hands-off, Robert Rodriguez and his new Castro hat dropped a major news bomb on his fans. Not only is he already hard at work on a Machete sequel (Machete Kills), but after that’s done and released, he’ll be giving us Machete Kills Again, which he referred to as a “space opera” or “Machete kills in space.” Funny, I remember watching the original and thinking, “Gee, this was a letdown this should be in outer space.”

On top of that, Rodriguez also said that he’s eager to get to work on Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For after he completes Spy Kids 4. The director claims that he has already written the Sin City sequel and that he’d like to get to work on it (in 3D, of course) this year. And on top of THAT, Rodriguez and Kevin Eastman announced that they are collaborating on a new Heavy Metal film, which David Fincher dropped out of in 2008.

So how the hell is Rodriguez getting all this work done, Indiewire? I mean, aside from the meth.

Already the owner of Troublemaker Studios, QuickDraw is just another avenue that buys Rodriguez his independence outside of the Hollywood system. “How to break into industry?,” he asked? “Rethink traditions. Having your own financing, you avoid the pain in the ass factor. Go right into how to get that idea out. It’s very important for a filmmaker to be part entrepreneur.” Like “Grindhouse” which spawned the career of “Hobo With A Shotgun” director Jason Eisener, Rodriguez said with “Heavy Metal” they’d also be holding a trailer contest—aspiring filmmakers take note.

Responded one of the fans in attendance, “I’m sorry, you said to rethink traditions and have your own financing? How do I get my own financing?” To which Rodriguez replied, “I’m sorry, I forgot the middle step – ???”
