DIE, GOLDEN GLOBES

12.11.08 Written by Vince Mancini

The Golden Globe noms came out today, and it was nice to see Tom Cruise recognized as a Best Supporting Actor for his three minutes of hilarious wigger dancing and fat suit wearing in Tropic Thunder.  Such a talent.  A lot of people probably wouldn’t have put him in there with Robert Downey Jr, Heath Ledger, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, but I think the video speaks for itself. They’re probably trying to make up for snubbing the Wayans Bros in White Chicks all those years ago. Elsewhere, Clint Eastwood was recognized for his awesome singing. No, really!

BOX OFFICE CRAPS ON FAMOUS ITALIANS

09.15.08 Written by Vince Mancini

When The Hollywood Reporter was calling tired cop drama Righteous Kill a “consensus favorite” to top the box office the same weekend a Coen Brothers and Tyler Perry movie opened, I was wondering what they were smoking.  The consensus favorite is “dicks”.  Said the studio Friday:

“We targeted the older male audience, and it looks like they’re going to come,” Overture marketing chief Peter Adee said. “From the tracking, it looks like the younger males are going to come as well.”

Reported Nikki Finke on Sunday: Overture Films only paid $10 million to acquire North American rights to Righteous Kill, which earned 3rd place and $16.5 million for the weekend. Stars Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino attracted just a one-quadrant older male audience. The problem is that neither actor has starred in a decent drama lately, including this hackneyed script.

Gosh, what’s the world coming to when you can’t make money on a movie that looks like something we’ve already seen twelve times?  People love that shit.  Top five after the jump.

BURN AFTER READING: 1ST REVIEWS, NEW CLIP

08.28.08 Written by Vince Mancini

The early reviews for the Coen Brothers’ Burn After Reading are in, and surprisingly for the dudes fresh off the four-Oscar winning No Country For Old Men, some of them aren’t that positive. Take some dicklicker from Variety, for example:

Nothing about the project’s execution inspires the feeling that this was ever intended as anything more than a lark, which would be fine if it were a good one. As it is, audience teeth-grinding sets in early and never lets up.

…on any more substantive level, “Burn After Reading” is a flame-out.

Of course, he goes through the usual knocks on Coen Brothers movies – silliness, cartoony characters – and lest we forget, a lot of critics weren’t too fond of The Big Lebowski either. In fact, this same critic, Todd McCarthy, gave The Big Lebowski almost the same review.

[Burn After Reading] Major star names might stoke some mild B.O. heat with older upscale viewers upon U.S. release Sept. 12, but no one should expect this reunion of George Clooney and Brad Pitt to remotely resemble an “Ocean’s” film commercially.

[Big Lebowski] World premiered at Sundance as a special screening, this Gramercy release looks headed for a mixed critical and luke-warm B.O. reception upon its release in March.

Reading bad reviews of the Big Lebowski feels like going back to your high school guidance counselor’s office and listening to him tell you you won’t amount to anything. Oh yeah? OH YEAH? Well guess what, smart guy, I started a movie blog after I got fired from editing porn! At least 20 people read it and I get to take masturbation breaks during the day! During the day! What have you done? WHAT THE F*CK HAVE YOU DONE??

Which is to say, I dunno, the movie looks funny to me. *tries to act casual*

SORT OF NEW BURN AFTER READING CLIP

08.27.08 Written by Vince Mancini

This new clip from Burn After Reading is pretty similar to footage you’ve probably already seen in the trailer or in the trailer for Brad Pitt’s character. But since Burn After Reading is one of those rare movies that actually looks like it will be worth a shit, I thought I’d post it anyway.

Burn After Reading opens September 12th, comes from the Coen brothers, and stars Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, JK Simmons, and Richard Jenkins. Basically, almost everyone you’d ever want to see in a movie. Brad Pitt plays a dimwitted gym employee who finds some of John Malkovich’s CIA documents and tries to blackmail him. I tried to blackmail a guy once, but he wouldn’t pay me so I had to kill him. *narrows eyes* Let that be a lesson to you. *tears off a piece of Fruit Roll-Up, chews menacingly*

COEN BROS TO THE RESCUE. AGAIN.

08.13.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Believe it or not, I do occasionally get tired of ripping on horrible-looking movies.  But yet again, just when all looked lost, some new trailers hit the web and reminded us all that there’s still a Coen Brothers movie coming out next month.  After the jump I’ve got character trailers for Linda (Frances McDormand) and Osborne (John Malkovich).  God, John Malkovich should be in every movie.

Of all the Coens flicks, Burn After Reading to me looks most like The Big Lebowski, the film that made the world safe for hating The Eagles.  That’s right, I got your Witchy Woman right here, Henley, you twat.
