This Week in Posters & Stills: PROMETHEUS, the new Superman

04.05.12 Written by Vince Mancini

THIS WEEK IN POSTERS & STILLS: I’m leading off with the new batch of stills from Prometheus, since this movie is the strongest nerd crack I’ve got until more Dark Knight Rises stuff drops. This one’s of Idris Elba on the bridge of the ship, which I believe is called, aptly, “Prometheus.” I’m getting a weird hokey vibe from this picture. It’s like a cross between “I’m givin’ ‘er all I’ve got, captain!” and the trolley driver from The Rock.

Worst Anti-Piracy Ad Ever

03.26.12 Written by Vince Mancini

I’m definitely not one of these “STEALING CONTENT IS TOTALLY OKAY!” hippies, but if I was going to create an ad explaining why you shouldn’t illegally download movies, I doubt a big budget turd based on a board game and starring Rihanna would be where I’d start.

Universal Pictures U.K. and the Industry Trust for IP Awareness have united to deploy the studio’s upcoming tentpole Battleship, with Liam Neeson and Rihanna among its crew, in the war against piracy.
The 30-second spot [WATCH IT BELOW] will be shown in all cinemas across the U.K. over an eight-week period ending May 10.
Edited with film content, the trailer turns the camera on the viewer to capture the emotions that watching film and TV can evoke with the legend that these as ”moments worth paying for.”
It’s part of the Industry Trust for IP Awareness’ campaign entitled “Moments Worth Paying For” and is the first in a series of title-specific ad spots beginning in theaters to boost anti-piracy sentiment amongst consumers.

Don’t ruin our brilliant plan to capitalize on name recognition by naming a recycled script after a 50-year-old board game! PLEASE, WON’T SOMEONE THINK OF THE EXECUTIVES?!

Universal Pictures U.K. managing director Niels Swinkels said: “Showcasing our summer blockbuster Battleship, the message reinforces the notion that films like this are made to be seen on the big screen and deepens cinemagoers’ understanding that their support is essential for us to continue to deliver such unique experiences.” [THR]

“Unique experiences?” Holy shit, dude. Serious question: are you high? Anyway, don’t download Battleship. You wouldn’t want to risk the possibility that the studio wouldn’t be able to make another Battleship. I mean that would be, like, uh… terrible.

This Week in Posters and Stills

03.23.12 Written by Vince Mancini

THIS WEEK IN POSTERS: Okay, I don’t like to bore you guys with too much of the behind-the-scenes around these parts, but just to clarify, I wasn’t lying when I said that I was moving this feature to Wednesdays. It’s just that I wrote up the whole thing Wednesday, hit ‘Publish,’ and instead of actually publishing, the entire post decided to disappear. Which was super convenient, since this post takes longer than half a week’s posts combined. So that was awesome for me. But again, look for This Week in Posters and Stills on Wednesdays. I’ll do my best to grab all the latest posters, one-sheets, set photos, promo stills and the occasional trailer where applicable, in the hopes of giving you a nice overview of the films that are out there, accompanied by my usual smartass captions to help the pill go down. PHEW! We clear now? Good.

DARK SHADOWS: Here’s the first of a big new batch of character posters from Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows. The consensus seems to be that this looks terrible (and generally speaking, trying to adapt cult stuff from 50 years ago that’s already been referenced many times since is a recipe for disaster), but… if you ask me, Dark Shadows looks better than most of Burton’s other recent output. I’ll take this over Frankweenie, for instance. I mean, everyone has super pale skin and ghostly lips, but… at least they’re not desaturated with occasional pops of red this time, right? Baby steps. As long as we view all future Tim Burton projects only in the context of other Tim Burton projects, he should be fine.

New Battleship trailer reveals aliens, red pegs

03.13.12 Written by Vince Mancini

There’s a new Battleship trailer on the web, and once again Universal has failed to incorporate commenter Stallonewolf’s near-perfect tagline “Let the bodies hit D-4.” It’s sad, but we do get a more revealing look at what the aliens will look like in the $200 million board game adaptation. The answer is Boba Fett/Halo dudes with Predator mouths for hands, basically.

"E.T. PHONE AGENT."

In addition, we get to see how the red pegs of the board game will be incorporated into a movie about ocean-going aliens, since I know that was a big question on everyone’s minds. “The aliens will shoot them and make stuff ‘splode,” being the answer to that one. Still, no reveal yet of who’s going to be the one to deliver, at the climactic moment, that signature dialog “YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP!” You know it’s going to happen. It has to. I can’t wait. I’m going to be so excited I’ll probably throw my coke at the screen and punch the guy next to me. “USA! USA!” I’ll shout, pouring liquid butter down my pants. That’s what the cinema is all about.

This Week in Posters and Publicity Stills

03.07.12 Written by Vince Mancini

Man, I'm sick of musicians stealing all the good pussy

THIS WEEK IN POSTERS: This week, I expanded This Week in Posters’s mandate to include not only movie posters, but set photos and publicity stills as well. That way I could include this shot (via TheFilmStage) from the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewelyn Davis. That one’s got Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, and this cat (the guy holding him is Oscar Isaac, but who’s keeping track). Most weeks, that would be the highlight, but this week, we’ve also got Val Kilmer on a BMX. BELIEVE IT!
