FRIDAY FREE FOR ALL: VOLTRON IS VIOLENT

04.04.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Friday Free for All is a regular feature on FilmDrunk in which I post random videos from around the world, and from movies new and old – united solely by their awesomeness. Send your tips to lance@filmdrunk.com, and no, I’m not going to post your boyfriend’s hilarious 12-minute, shot-for-shot parody of The Bourne Identity.

Today’s Friday-Free-for-All clip comes from tipster Jeremy, who points out that Volton was based on a Japanese cartoon called Go Lion!. All Japanese cartoons are required by law to feature tentacle rape and/or graphic, inexplicable violence, and Go Lion!, was no different.  This video contains scenes from the original.

Ready, set, LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR!

DRAGONBALLZ IS A HIGH CLASS PRODUCTION

12.07.07 Written by Vince Mancini

The Dragonball Z movie, which was already an artsy, high-brow affair by virtue of its educated fan base, just bumped itself up a notch with the casting of former Real World San Diego cast member Jamie Chung.

Jamie, who has since been busy making web-mercials for Passion.com (after the jump), will play Chi Chi. I’m so stoked about this news that I put an extra spoiler on my car and drove around blasting my favorite techno record – the decals make it go faster!

Chi Chi is lifelong love interest of Dragonball hero Goku (Justin Chatwin), and has grown up with him. She has studied martial arts and has always suspected that Goku possesses talents that are unusual and extraordinary. After Goku embarks on his journey to redeem his grandfather’s death, Chi Chi meets up with Goku and his crew at a tournament of champions where their mutual attraction finally heats up during a training session. The most important thing about playing a martial arts expert is being able to look Asian, and Jamie definitely has that going for her.  She may just become the most famous former Real World castmember ever.  Eat your heart out, Puck! Move over, stupid hair guy!

TOBEY MAGUIRE KNOWS WHAT DORKS LIKE

09.07.07 Written by Vince Mancini

Tobey Maguire (who looks pretty much like what I expect a guy named "Tobey" to look like) is on to produce and possibly star in a motion picture adaptation of Robotech, whose rights were recently acquired by WB.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Yeah, okay.  Ever noticed how Japanese anime characters always have enormous eyeballs?  I think it's like Japanese artists' fantasy of what it must be like to not be Japanese.  As if non-Asians all stand around with our gigantic eyes going, "OH MY GOD, I CAN SEE EVERYTHING. THERE, BEHIND THAT BUILDING – IT'S A SCHOOL GIRL BEING MOLESTED BY AN OCTOPUS.  QUICK EVERYONE! TO THE ROBOT CAVE!"

At least, that's what it's like in my fantasy of what's going on in the head of a Japanese animator.
