If the idea of Jude Law playing a Cockney safecracker in Dom Hemingway alone isn’t enough to grab you, how about this poster (courtesy of Vulture) of him posing in front of a giant Jill Greenberg monkey portrait? The baboon really ties the room together. And the picture behind him ain’t bad either! (Sick Jude Law burn, me. Classic stuff.)
In case you were wondering, the baboon’s name is Georgia, according to Fox Searchlight’s interview with the photographer:
Tell us about the origin of the piece “Georgia”.
Georgia is an Hamadryas Baboon that I photographed in 2003 for my Monkey Portraits book project.
How did you come up with the idea of doing a book of portraits of monkeys? How did you cast each simian?
The first monkey was shot on a job in october of 2001 in LA, where the client’s concept required we rent a cat, dog, and Katie the capuchin. I thought it would be nice to do a portrait of the monkey after the shoot was over. When I saw the results, I loved the personality and humor and decided to do a series. I did it over about five years since they were quite expensive to rent. They are all animal actors and they come with trainers, etc. It took a while to find a gallery to show the work, and a publisher as well. I contacted all the animal agencies I could find and ended up shooting in New York, Los Angeles and Miami.
I don’t know what the hell I’m doing writing this blog when there’s clearly money to be made in the monkey rentals.
Jude Law plays DOM HEMINGWAY, a larger-than-life safecracker with a loose fuse who is funny, profane, and dangerous. After twelve years in prison, he sets off with his partner in crime Dickie (Richard E. Grant) looking to collect what he’s owed for keeping his mouth shut and protecting his boss Mr. Fontaine (Demian Birchir). After a near death experience, Dom tries to re-connect with his estranged daughter (Emilia Clarke), but is soon drawn back into the only world he knows, looking to settle the ultimate debt.
It comes from writer/director Richard Shepard, whose last film was 2005’s The Matador, which I don’t remember being great, but did have a thoroughly memorable shot of Pierce Brosnan walking through hotel lobby in euro boots and underwear.
You don’t forget a thing like that. Dom Hemingway opens April 14, 2014.
