I won’t pretend to know a lot about Steve Coogan, other than he was in Tropic Thunder and The Other Guys, and those are movies that I enjoyed. I also remember reading that Courtney Love blamed him for Owen Wilson’s attempted suicide or whatever a few years back. But I don’t think that was as serious as people made it out to be, because I went to a Jimmy Buffett concert in Tampa around that time and Wilson was sitting next to my friend and his wife and they shared a bottle of Captain Morgan. So maybe Courtney Love was making things up or my memory just sucks.
Either way, people seem to be quite fond of Coogan’s character, Alan Partridge, enough that he made a movie entitled, Alan Partridge in Alpha Papa. The film will hit theaters in England and wherever else on August 7, but I don’t have a clue as to whether or not it is being released in America. Maybe this is revenge for that whole Declaration thing. Way to hold a grudge.
Alpha Papa has a new teaser out today, and I’d probably be a lot more upset if it was actually called Gunbird.

Steve Coogan will always get a thumbs up from me thanks to Hamlet 2
“Dads really gonna crucify me for this one!”

Mango ice teas are probably still his Kryptonite
Pontypool with Alan Partridge? Sounds like a whole passel of awesome.
Alan Partridge has a long and glorious history on British TV. He started out hosting a talk show, which was dreadful. Then there was a couple of mockumentary serieses about him rebuilding his career, which highlighted what a terrible human being he is. This is all spread over about 20 years, and he’s consistently the best thing Steve Coogan has ever done.
I’ve seen Knowing Me, Knowing You and I’m Alan Partridge, and I thought they were great. The Christmas one (Knowing Me, Knowing Yule) is especially enjoyable.
But before he was a fake talk show host (AH HAAA!) on a fake talk show he was a fake sports caster on a fake news show, The Day Today

Spend some time with Saxondale on Netflix.. I stumbled on it accidentally and watched both seasons straight through. Thoroughly overlooked.

Aha!!
Everything involving Alan Partridge gets the thumbs up. Don’t make me hunt up his lectures on James Bond.
Also, everyone should watch The Trip for some of the best meta-comedy you’ll see this side of something quite remarkable.
I watch this clip whenever I get depressed. It’s like a little coke bump of instant joy.
He’s pretty great as Tony Wilson in “24 Hour Party People.”
“You’re a MENTALIST!”
If it contains moments like this then I’ll definitely be watching:

Coogan was fantastic in 24 Hour Party People, and of course, The Trip. The Partridge stuff is hit or miss (to me there’s a TON of you-have-to-be-British humor in it), but his sheer assholery is entertaining in itself.
