Don’t Expect Another ‘Simpsons’ Movie Any Time Soon

The Simpsons Movie turned out so much better than it had any right to. Between the decades of fan anticipation, a screenplay credited to 11 different writers and producers, and an unnecessary Green Day cameo, the film should have been a Popsicle stick skyscraper-style disaster; instead, it was about as good as a cinematic adaptation of a TV show that’s currently in its 24th season. So, B-.

But, in a rare showing of Hollywood restraint, where Oz the Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is greenlight hours after the original didn’t turn out to be a flying monkey turd, Simpsons Movie director David Silverman says we shouldn’t expect a sequel for at least another decade. So, season 35?

Speaking at UCLA, Matt Groening recalled the pressure of juggling the production of the 2007 feature alongside its TV counterpart: “It took us four years [to make the movie] and it killed us…it stole animators from the show.” David Silverman projected that no follow-up film should be expected for “maybe another 10, 15 years.” (Via)

Better start sooner than that, if you want to make the movie before Nancy Cartwright and her Scientology cohorts die on their way to their home planet in 2019. If the Simpsons cast and crew don’t want to work on a new, time-consuming story, they could just revisit one of their dozens of fake films. I’d take The Blunch Black of Blotre Blame, Ernest Goes Somewhere Cheap, Colonel Dracula Joins the Navy, Hail to the Chimp, My Baby is an Ugly Man (the greatest Happy Madison movie starring Kevin James not yet made), and Too Many Grandmas over The Simpsons Movie 2 any day. Take it away, Vince.
