Disney just released their Oscar-nominated animated short, Paperman, on YouTube, which seems like a great place for a short film.
A blend of hand-drawn animation and computer graphics, Paperman is set in a stylized mid-century Manhattan. It deals with the star-crossed love of two office workers, and how a pile of papers brings them together. Disney released the video on YouTube late Tuesday.
The short is drenched in nostalgia — not least because of our increasingly paperless offices. (Throwing your laptop out of the window doesn’t quite have the same airborne effect.) But the seamless hand-drawn and computer combo — created by a group of just 12 artists and first-time director John Kahrs — is something new in the world. [Mashable]
Is it just me, or does the cartoon chick kind of look like Anne Hathaway? Maybe it’s the giant eyes. And the song they use sounds like the opening of “Radio” by REM. Sorry, I’m making all kinds of connections this morning. Anyway, I like imagining some poor child trying to rent Paperman, and accidentally renting The Paperboy and then crying when Nicole Kidman starts peeing on Zac Efron and John Cusack masturbates into his prison jump suit.

Caught this one when they put it in front of Wreck-It Ralph… Just fantastic. I love the hand-drawn/CGI split- the look reminds me a lot of Aladdin.
Same here. I was not expecting something this good in front of a non-Pixar flick. Didn’t this get an Oscar nom too?
Likewise. Even the kids in the theater liked this. Those who understood it anyway.
“So, uh, I think I just got fired. Also, these paper airplanes really want us to bone. Also, if we were going to buildings directly across the street from each other, why were we taking different trains?”
I spent that entire post trying to restrain myself from saying “magical realism is bullshit.”
MEN NO UNDERSTAND DIRECTIONS.
I just assumed he missed it, but I’m always down for some cynicism as well.
He did, in fact, miss it because he was gawking at the paper with the lip marks on it. Plus, she was clearly on an interview/delivery and could have had other stops on the way.
Xander wins. Those are all excellent and hilarious points.
Wonder if there will be a porn parody
Gape her, man: A Porn Parody
I’m not crying. Why would you say that?
Little Jimmy Halpert got an animated short made after him?
See I was really hoping for more Mad Men and less Office.
I couldn’t decide between Kraskinski and Schwartzman.
“Throwing your laptop out of the window doesn’t quite have the same airborne effect”
Maybe not the same airborn effect, but I think Kramer effectively demonstrated the positive mental health impacts.

I saw this last night and it’s one of the most adorable, heartwarming things I’ve ever seen….
You know, parts of this reminded me of Schindler’s List, except where I cried at the end-of this.
The characters reminded me of Jim and Pam.
Now I have all the feels.
Well dammit, that was cute as hell.
And then they had sex right? There’s the magic.
I’m not seeing the love story here. What I’m seeing is a case of corporate espionage. Paperman is distributing confidential corporate information to a competing company, all for the sake of poonani. They might as well name the girl Anna Chapman.
This wouldn’t be quite so romantic if her gums had been bleeding.
Paperman is already a cute little movie with Ryan Reynolds as the imaginary friend/Superhero of Jeff Daniels. Emma Stone is in it too, and Jeff and Emma have sort of a Lost in Translation thing going on. I liked it but it’s not exactly good.
That movie was one of those pretentious, retarded flicks that makes people not care about indie movies. Daniels was even less likeable in that one than in The Squid and the Whale.
Who says characters in movies have to be likable? I just thought it was quirky, sort of like how Juno is stupid amounts of quirky. It’s not good, that doesn’t make it unwatchable.
F*** WORK!
that was pretty muhfuggin charming.
They usually release all the short films as part of a package. You can probably find them playing at a theater near you. I went this past weekend. All five were excellent. However, three of them stood out as being “more excellent.” The Simpsons short was outstanding. There was also one called Adam And Dog which was just beautiful. The other two were also pretty good.
Here’s a link to some of them:

And, of course, the one on this page was the third one that was “more excellent.”
