The Academy late yesterday released a list of some 75 songs that will be eligible for the Best Original Song Oscar when the nominations are released January 10th. The full list is after the jump, and there are a number of fascinating, thought-provoking, eyebrow-raising, and intriguing possibilities, but let’s face it, the only one that matters is “Ladies of Tampa,” which Matthew McConaughey not only co-wrote, but predicted would eventually be nominated for an Oscar. The man is a shirtless, greased up oracle.
Entertainment Weekly described the background of the song in piece slideshow back in July:
Dallas’ goodbye to ”Ladies of Tampa” (Part 1)
In the original script, Matthew McConaughey’s character, club owner Dallas, did not have a stripping scene. But McConaughey not only wanted one, he knew exactly how it should play out: He’d begin by serenading the women from the stage with a slow song. Music supervisor Frankie Pine suggested she and McConaughey pen the tune with Martin Blasick, McConaughey’s guitar coach. They wrote ”Ladies of Tampa” in about three hours at McConaughey’s hotel. ”The song is silly as hell, but Matthew swears it’s gonna get nominated for an Academy Award. He keeps telling me I have to pick out my dress,”’ Pine says, laughing. ”And you know what, I am gonna submit it.”
If you were in a hotel room with Matthew McConaughey for three hours, I doubt writing a song was the only thing that happened, alright alright alright.
Anyway, you can check out the full list below. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the scene where Abraham Lincoln went in front of congress and sang “Beans Beans The Musical Fruit” accompanied by foot stomps and armpit farts totally got snubbed. What crap, Day-Lewis acted the hell out of that scene.

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy, if you screw this one up, so help me I’ll… I’ll… well, I’ll continue to regard you with approximately the same level of contempt is probably what I’ll do.

I cannot wait to see MC Conaughey up on stage to accept his Oscar in a velcro break-away tux. Hey ladies!
Only if he says “Hey ladies!” in a Jerry Lewis voice.
Well, if “Ladies of Tampa” can’t win, I’m pulling for “I Be Here” from Saint Dracula, my favourite song from my favourite film that I’d never heard of until just now.
“The man is a shirtless, greased up oracle.”
Greasy Sax Man begs to differ.
PREACH.
+1 to Otto for the assist.
I’d probably vote for “Yo No Se” from Casa De Mi Padre, but that’s only because I’m partial to narcocorridos.
Katy Perry is eligible for an Oscar? Maybe it really will be the end of the world next Friday.
Are we sure Metaphorical Blanket wasn’t an unreleased Jefferson Airplane album?
The very fact that Halloween Party is eligible for an Oscar just makes my head hurt.

First, to be on this list is huge. Second, I know “Halloween Party” is a small indie low budget film and will often (not always) be dismissed from the get go by the studio big boy’s club. But what I do know is there are hidden gems in indie films…an actor’s performance, a director’s vision, a writer’s voice…. a SONG. In this case, “Voodoo” is a very good song and is worthy to not only be heard, but nominated! My hats off to this group of artists!
It should win an Oscar for that record scratch in the trailer.
“For You” from “Act of Valor”
IT WAS WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY ACTUAL NAVY SEALS.
Please tell me they performed it with their noses on those adorable horn stands.
+1 Erswi you handsome devil.
So…many…movies…I have NO desire to see. So…many…songs…I have NO desire to hear…
Why, that could be a song cue itself!
He better win
I marked out for The Sambola! International Dance Craze being on this list!
Wow Morton…have you seen the movie? Romantic comedy about a girl looking for love on the most deceptive night of the year. Lessons in not judging a book by its cover? I’m going to guess NOT. No worries…if you want to see what the academy voters are seeing when they make their decision, go here: [www.youtube.com]. If your head still hurts, take an aspirin.
The whole point of movies having posters/box art and trailers is so that we can judge them by their “covers”. If any film would like my sincere and honest evaluation beyond those indicators, simply provide me with a screener a week or more in advance of said film’s DVD release date. As for my headache: I apologize; it didn’t have anything to do with this movie. Turns out I had a concussion.
I can see that. It wouldn’t seem like it was much fun though if it weren’t bright, colorful and full of crazy characters. If you let me know where to send a screener of this or our future film on dementia, I would happily oblige. Sorry to hear about your concussion.
Voodoo is absolutely a great song, by far & it would be the true ‘feel good’ story of the year that America needs if in fact it gets nominated. I love it, & the film looks great. Check it out & ya wanna know what makes MY head hurt?? The tired old predictable nominees, lets get fresh blood in there!:)
Exactly Ho! Fresh would be a nice change for Hollywood!
Poor Morton! Giving off bad vibes, regarding something you obviously know nothing about, results in bad karma! Take the time to check out ‘Voodoo’ before you judge it. A feel good music soundtrack to a feel good movie – ‘Halloween Party’. So you think you know people? Think again! And Mort … watch out for that karma … ouch!
Karma is a bitch, but only because that’s what my mom’s dog is named! ;)
As for giving off bad vibes, I’d argue that I’ve only helped this film by highlighting it in a sea of mostly higher-profile films. Assuming ‘Voodoo’ gets the nomination, and (hopefully) the win, I wouldn’t mind a thank you from the composers.
Seasons Greetings!
Hey Mortie, you must have gotten the plain kind…if you get iodized you’ll find you have the energy to dance and you’ll realize Voodoo is definitely a great dance tune. That’s it… get iodized add ‘a little hair of the dog’ and you won’t even need the aspirin.you’ll be havin’ such a great time dancin’.
Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately I suffer from anhedonia, and am incapable of experiencing pleasure. Probably the cause of my headaches, now that I’m thinking about it.
Poor old Mortie, or ‘Post Mortie’ as they call him in the editing room. Way to pour ‘Salt’ in the wound. The very fact that you judge what you haven’t heard… It’s a good song. You should take that chip off your shoulder and see if it’s been obstructing your ear canal.
It’s a great song, I liked it even more when Screamin Jay Hawkins and Credence Clearwater Revival sang it.
Pepper-
Great screen name! Unfortunately, ‘Post Morty’ -we use the “y” ’round these parts- is my dead father’s name. I’m just Morton Jr. Or I was; I guess I’m just Morton now.
Is this the song?
That can’t be it, the Oscar category is for original music, that’s a terrible cover of Screamin Jay Hawkins “I Put A Spell On You”.
Yes Vince, that’s “Voodoo”. And yes Stinky, it’s Creedence inspired but very much original and not a cover.
The song VooDoo from the Halloween Party movie has my vote for sure!! (=
I don’t see “Act of Valor” nominated for “Best Recruiting Movie.”
