In a strange twist, Vince and I actually agreed that The Amazing Spider-Man wasn’t just a lousy film, as it was also the same exact story as the original Spider-Man retold and simply filmed with a few different characters. And while I disagree with Vince saying that Alfred Molina as Dr. Octopus was the greatest comic book movie villain of all-time (I prefer Heath Ledger’s Joker, Jack Nicholson’s Joker, Ian McKellan’s Magneto and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, to name a few), I can agree that he was by far the best Spider-Man villain. But then, that’s like saying Nick was the best 98 Degrees singer.
I guess that’s why Sony and director Marc Webb are trying to swing for the fences for a villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as Variety reported yesterday that Jamie Foxx is in negotiations to play Electro, the guy with a starfish on his face. And according to Foxx’s Twitter, it’s probably going to happen.
Sources also told Variety that Foxx would play Electro, and Foxx later tweeted, “Dressed up as Electro for Halloween last night. Costume fits well.”
Electro is the alter ego of Max Dillon, an enemy of Spider-Man who gains the ability to control electricity after being struck by lightning. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the character first appeared in “The Amazing Spider-Man #9″ in February 1964.
Variety also points out that Sony is growing quite accustomed to cutting Foxx checks, as he’s starring in Django Unchained and what will obviously be the greatest action film in history, White House Down. But as for Electro, I agree with my Gamma Squad cousin Dan Seitz that Foxx is definitely an inspired choice for a comic book villain, but I just don’t like the Electro character. And if you’re going to have a character who has been struck by lightning, you won’t do it better than this…

Jack Nicholson’s Joker is the worst shit of all time.
Electro was always my favorite Spidey villain, but he’s also the easiest to beat. You toss a manhole cover at a fire hydrant and boom, he’s dead. Hollywood’s never picked up on the cue that Spider-Man’s best villains are the ones who are awkward, semi-nobodies like Spidey, so I expect Electro to become an ELECTRICITY ENERGY GOD or whatever at the end.
Sorry for liking something.
? You are totally allowed to like it, I was just sharing my opinion on it. I never liked the idea of Batman’s craziest, most violent villain being a 50+ year old chubby guy who mostly just dances and rides parade floats.
It’s pretty hard to like Nicholson’s joker after Ledger just absolutely nailed the part. Are any early Batman villains (other than Jack) comparable to Nolan’s villains? No.
Yay. Things I can agree with. Totally on board with Nicholson’s Joker as one of the least impressive villains. Also agree with Ashley’s thoughts on the Spider-Man villains – except for Nicholson.
But then again my first introduction to Spider-Man was through the Electric Company and that probably creates a bit of an uphill battle.
I don’t like Heath Ledger in TDK, and I like Nicholson in burton’s Batman.
so there.
Ledger’s joker does not at all remind me of any of the comic book Joker portrayals, even in miller’s The Dark Knight.
It just seemed like a typical action movie villain with makeup and weird voice, to me. Not impressed. Nicholson brought a certain level of zaniness to it.. the joker is a JOKER after all. That clownishness was nowhere to be found in Ledger’s Oscar-baiting twaddle.
I read an interview with Ledger where he talked about starting The Killing Joke and then ‘just sort of set it down.’ He had no reverence for the character outside of his own vision for it, so he fit perfectly into Nolan’s fold. I always hated how Nolan acted like he was slumming it by making a comic book film. Like it was only great because of his genius.
Electro is
a girlin drag now?He better bust out some dance moves. I want to see the Electro Slide.
Just to mess with the fanboys heads, why not (a) create a brand-new villain (you know, one that wasn’t created 48 years ago) or (b) bring in one from another Marvel series. Spiderman Meets…the Red Skull!!!!.
Or my ultimate dream: Spiderman vs. ALF
I would watch a Spidered Man fight an Alien Life Form so much.
Better ALF matchup would be against Hellboy. The whole cat thing would make it work.
I know i’m not alone in thinking Venom is the best Spider-Man villain. Just erase the Topher Grace version from your mind. Imagine a Channing Tatum Venom. We can still dare to dream.
I couldn’t agree with you more except for using C Tates. I don’t know about how I feel now, but when I was obsessed with the Fox Kid’s Spider-Man animated series I always thought Mark Whalberg could play a good Eddie Brock.
This new version however seems to be drawing more from the Ultimate Spider-Man universe. Isn’t Flash Thompson Venom in Ultimate Spidey?
A guy with spider powers named Spider-Man fights a guy with electric powers named Electro. I’m glad we’re not named so creatively in real life, because Two Minute Man wouldn’t look very good on my business cards.
I wish Two Minute Man was an American Revolutionist with a dead fetus attached to his head.
4 Wine Coolers And The Back Seat Of A Jeep Grand Cherokee Man has a nice ring to it.
How about a villain named “FilmDrunk,” who has a film-reel stuck on his head like a beret (or, FilmDrunkess, who has two reels stuck on her chest for a bra), staggers around mumbling and shouting incoherently BUT somehow is competent enough to set up elaborate movie-based death-traps for Spider-Man?
I like it. He can force Spider Man to watch ‘From Justin to Kelly’ on repeat and leave a gun with one bullet on a table next to him.
They should introduce more of a meddler than an outright direct action antagonist. Throw a little bit of a detective story into the mix with Spider having to sneak around spy like. The Chameleon or Kingpin.
I don’t know why but I’ve never gotten into the Spiderman movies. The few I have seen are strange because I don’t remember Peter Parker being a pussy.

The best super hero villain of all time? The one-two punch of Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Boddicker and Ronny Cox as Dick Jones in Robocop. And while were at it, can’t we just all agree that Robocop is the best super hero film of all time?
What’s that? Doesn’t count because its not based on a comic book? That’s precisely the beauty of Robocop. Verhoeven didn’t have to pander to mouth-breathing fan boys choking on their inhalers every time a character does something that contradicts their motivation clearly established in issue #234 back in 1962.
THIS!
A Spider-Man with a fear of intimacy from nearly being eaten by previous mates versus a narcoleptic Sandman would be an improvement from the last movie.
They get a star for the role then they write the script. They’d be better served if they wrote the script and then, got the star for the role.
