I’ve long praised Brazil as a magical land where butts are worshiped and few f*cks are given, but today’s news threatens to change all that. It turns out a Muslim group in Brazil sued YouTube in Brazilian court over hosting Sam Bacile’s now-infamous Innocence of Muslims trailer… and they won. The court ordered YouTube to pull the trailer within 10 days.
The decision by a state court in Sao Paulo, home to a large Middle Eastern immigrant community, came hours after Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff criticized “Islamophobia” in Western countries in a speech at the United Nations.
The lawsuit against the controversial film was brought by a Brazilian Muslim group, the National Islamic Union, against YouTube owner Google Inc for posting on the Internet a film it said was offensive and a violation of the constitutional right to freedom of religion.
In his decision, Judge Gilson Delgado Miranda said the case juxtaposed freedom of expression and the need to protect individuals or groups of people from action that might incite religious discrimination.
Miranda concluded that banning something illegal should not “offend” freedom of thought and expression, according to the ruling posted online by Estado de S. Paulo newspaper.
Well sure, suspending freedom of speech in certain cases shouldn’t hurt freedom of speech. Everyone has access to freedom of speech, as long as they don’t say things that other people don’t like, that’s how it works, right?? … Meanwhile, back in America, Google execs, upon hearing the ruling, commented, “Oooh, an ultimatum from Brazil, we’re soooo scared. What are you going to do if we don’t take the video down, pull out our pubic hair?”
It wasn’t the only Brazilian court ruling against Google on Tuesday. Earlier, an elections court ordered the arrest of Google’s most senior executive in Brazil after the company failed to take down YouTube videos attacking a local mayoral candidate. [Reuters]
Arrested, seriously? Get it together, Brazil. I’m not sure you guys quite understand how the internet works (if our senators think it’s a series of tubes, God only knows what analogy they use over there). And anyway, don’t you have bigger things to worry about? Like, say, Blanka? If my countless hours of Street Fighter have taught me anything, it’s that you should be far more worried about Blanka than a couple of angry Muslims. He’ll bite your face! And the electricity!

Although I disagree with the ruling, inciteful (that’s a word right? Chrome says it’s not) speech is usually not protected by freedom of speech.
Speech.
Inciting riots is what the imams are doing, not the dude making goofy YouTube clips.
You can’t shout fire in a crowded theater, because it poses an immediate threat to everybody there, but you can shout fire on a golf course, and people will just look at you funny.
This guy didn’t highjack a satellite and beam his offensive content into people’s homes, he just put it up on YouTube, a public forum where you can and should be able to say anything you want.
Interestingly, Blanka appears to be the only person from Brazil who wears pants.
And yet Extremo the Clown can upload videos at will. And subscribe to mine. Funny old world.
Hey Brazil, stick to what you’re good at; thongs.
This is obviously false. Chael Sonnen taught me that they don’t have internet in Brazil.
No no no, they have internet, but you can’t get on until you feed a donkey a carrot. You feed him a carrot, and then he gives you 20 minutes of internet. That’s how it works.
Ahh yes! Brazil, where the horses look like buses.
I live in Brazil and it’s not like there’s no internet, we have one PC that goes from home to home since 1999, you just have to be patient.
Brazilians are huge fans Osamba bin Laden.
edit
Brazilians are huge fans of Osamba bin Laden.
Let’s just hope to God they don’t look up and notice that galaxy-sized Jesus statue come-at-me-bro’ing up on top of that hill over there.
This is a head scratcher. Given that the rioters were assholes with religious attachment to their body hair, you’d think Brazilians would be their natural enemies.
Do you think these people understand the irony of getting so riled up about an anti-islamic film that doesn’t exist that they’ll sue to get it taken down, and at the same time happily air a “Protocols of Zion” television show in the middle east and talk about the destruction of Israel?
Free speach* Is bullshit
*As long as no one takes offense
Muhammed can suck my atheist DICK. And so can most Brazilian women, cuz they fine as hell.
I don’t agree with the decision, but I do wish the US courts could order business executives be arrested. Probably would have cut down all those unlawful foreclosures and BS the banks have been pulling lately. I don’t think the CEOs and VP would be too keen on serving jail time.
