There’s plenty of news going around today about Hollywood’s latest remakes, sequels, sequels of remakes, reboots, and uncredited remakes of sequels, but I tend to enjoy this historical stuff a lot more. Thanks to the AV Club for digging up this classic video of Steven Spielberg watching the 1976 Oscar nominations, honoring the films of 1975, when he made Jaws, earning a Best Picture (but not Best Director) nomination. My favorite part of this is that Spielberg seems to be hanging out with a couple of gangster henchmen from the 30s. It’s a must-watch.
(from the 2:10 mark). “Foist of all, you can not have the best pictah if the directah is not also nominated. Who made the pictah, somebody’s mothah?? This man made Jyaws! Who’s kiddin’ who around heah? I mean, who made it, the shahk?”
Is that guy real? He’s great. He’s like if Gary Dell’Abbate had a baby with one of the gangster dogs from a Warner Bros cartoon. I’m convinced that guy’s not actually real, and that Andy Serkis is in a room somewhere covered in ping pong balls grabbing his crotch and telling people to put up their dukes. Andy Serkis. What an actor.

That guy is outraged by your “henchman” comparison. He only played a mob guy in Godfather, Godfather 2 and Rocky. In Taxi Driver he was just a sleazy taxi company owner.
Also, dude thought Jaws was about a loan shark.
The guy in the tuxedo t-shirt thought Jaws was a sequel to Deep Throat.
This footage was used years ago in a documentary about was on the MANIAC DVD about actor Joe Spinnell.
*Straightens ascot, waxes ironic moustache and minces away*
Yeah as the lovely gents above me said, that was Joe Spinell. He was in a movie called Maniac about a guy who scalps women and puts those scalps on mannequins.
It’s no cerebral palsy porn but it’s aight
We out here, eatin latke! Eatin hamantash! Swag! Swag! Swag! Swag! Swag! Swag! SWAAG! Swag! Swag!
For like two seconds Spielberg sounds how i imagine Hunter S. Thompson would if he had played Dungeons & Dragons all day with fellow perverts instead of doing LSD inciting gang bangs with the Angels
How does no one know who that is?? That “guy” is Joe Spinell. He was in Taxi Driver, The Godfather I and 2, Maniac, Crusing, 92 In The Shade, Rocky 1 ans 2, Maniac and tons of other amazing movies. He is one of the most recognizable character actors in film!
The Academy didn’t like Spielberg for a long time and they would only throw him a nomination if they absolutely had to. He didn’t win anything until he started doing Holocaust/WWII movies.
“I got beat up by fellini!” its going to be in my gravestone
At first, when I read the headline, I thought Spielberg was considering rebooting the 1976 Oscars.
