I’ve talked a lot of crap about the Golden Globes in the past, how they’re run by a shadowy cabal of foreign journalists who work for publications no one’s heard of and have closed membership, and generally choose nominees based on who throws the best parties, but after this year, I may have to rescind my criticism. Aside from bringing back Ricky Gervais to host (guaranteeing it will be more watchable than the Billy Crystal-hosted Oscars), they released their nominations today, and dare I say they’re pleasantly surprising. 50/50 finally got some recognition as a best picture of the year, and Brendan Gleeson got a nomination for The Guard. Even *I* had almost forgotten how awesome The Guard was.
That said, I have no idea how My Week with Marilyn is considered a comedy (mainly because I haven’t seen it — don’t all these movies come out next week?) and anyone who nominates The Iron Lady for anything should be forced to watch it three times in a row. That’s punishment enough. It’s like the iron maiden, but the pain is crushing boredom.
Also, why does Moneyball get a screenplay nomination again? Was it for that touching scene where Billy Beane’s daughter sings him a song from a jean commercial? Brilliant writing, that. It highlighted nicely the father-daughter relationship that was totally superfluous. So okay, I suppose that ‘great’ in the headline was a stretch, but it was still nice to see 50/50 and The Guard get recognized.
Hopefully next year they add a “Best Actor in a Spandex Suit” so Andy Serkis can win.

Game of Thrones for the win…
Andy Serkis can still hold out hope of winning an AVN award for ‘Most Balls On An Actor’.
Yeah I am not seeing how these are any more than the normal circle jerk of terrible shit produced by popular people in the industry.
Also, during my research for this joke, I noticed that, in 2005, the winner for ‘Best Male Newcomer’ was Tommy Gunn, and two years later it was Tommy Pistol, there’s a cinematographer named Ralph Parfait, and that’s now one of my favourite Wiki pages.
The movie selections are ok, but the TV nominations are an unending carnival of pain and shame.
TV nominations are always bad. I’ve never seen It’s Always Sunny nominated for anything.
And Modern Family is wildly overrated. Get it? Husbands are dumb!
So happy to see Hugo get a Best Picture nomination. I hope that carries on to the Academy Awards.
Yay, “50/50!” I suspect that the Oscars will still snub it, but JGL and the movie as a whole deserve some recognition. I’ll take that over Oscar bait any day.
And Baby Goose is up for best actor in comedy and drama? Well done, Golden Globes.
im kind of shocked that Muppets didn’t get a nod in at least the Best Song category. I mean, i haven’t seen any of the other movies in the Song category and probably never will, but i can’t imagine a world in which there is a better song in Albert Nobbs or Machine Gun Preacher than the stuff Brett McKenzie crafted for The Muppets.
oh, and that Marylin Monroe movie was a comedy? or was it a musical? or what.
There’s a few good things on here. 50/50 and American Horror story – glad they noticed those.
But no Breaking Bad or Parks and Rec destroys any legitimacy.
I didn’t see J. Edgar but I could barely contain my laughter every time I saw the part of the commercial where DiCaprio stares at the camera in old man makeup
Double Baby Goose.
!!
Wow, I need to see more movies. What a crappy year for animated features.
No Nick Offerman or Community = A Sham.
Probably should post this on Warming Glow, but I think the movie industry could use more Ron Swanson and Allison Brie’s boobs too. (Really, any industry could)
No Warrior nominations? Ridiculous. Best movie of the year.
What the fuck is with the Golden Globes and selecting movies and tv shows for best comedy when they are clearly not comedies? Nurse Jackie, Burlesque, and now My Week with Marylin. Its like they were chosen by the Russian Head of Comedy from Exporting Raymond.
If a man playing an ape is not nominated now, then when? WHEN?!
other actor in a drama nominations include: Bablyon Blotsby, Benedict Borganolis, and B.B. McBeberson BBBBBBBbbbbbbbbbbbbBbbbbb
Tim Tebow and Modern Family for “most talked about while being less than average.”
Yeah, no Breaking Bad nom for best Drama is an unforgivable sin, so forget it.
