Time Out London has compiled a list of what they consider the 50 best animated films of all time, with commentary from Terry Gilliam. It ranges from the positive:
[On South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut - #9] ‘These are my children! They’re brilliant. With the film, I was convinced they couldn’t pull it off because I just didn’t think it would sustain for 90 minutes. But of course it does, and it’s just brilliant. They’ve been able to maintain their outrageousness, their awfulness. They’re uncompromising, that’s why I love them.’
To the not as positive:
[On 1978's animated Lord of the Rings - #36] ‘I hated it. Bakshi was a strange one who took some of my favourite material and never managed pull it off completely on screen, He always seemed to be more ambitious than the money allowed. And the end result was, to me, horrible.’

So yeah. I could quibble with plenty of their choices, but in the end, I’ve never paid any attention to this publication before today and I don’t really care. I just post these things because for some reason, linear posts with numbers next to them are like catnip for the internet. I couldn’t have even named 50 animated films before this. But then, I drink. It was a good trade.

the only american in monty python like cartoons, great… way to make us look even dumber to the rest of the limeys… jery
You’ve seriously never heard of Time Out? And you live in NYC?
There was animation in every episode of Monty Python.
Let’s not forget, he supports a sex offender. With a record. 13 year olds, Dude.
OT:
I had to use Firefox to get here – is Explorer being a crackwhore bitch to anyone else?
The list was supposed to be the top 100 animated films. Sadly, Gilliam only got to 50 before he was squashed by a comically large boot.
I call bullshit! Not one of these movies has a tentacle monster raping a 15 year old Asian girl with pink hair!!
Are you fucking kidding me? Transformers: The Movie was only the 45th best? Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, and Orson Fucking Wells!? Plus, let’s not forget Weird Al Yankovic’s “Dare to be Stupid” single!
Also, how the hell is Akira not a top 5 movie? This list blows ass.
@JHC
Totally agree. Transformers the Movie is the only Transformers to movie as far as I’m concerned. Where The fuck is Ninja Scroll?!? Vampire Hunter D?!? Wicked City?!? Angel Cop?!?
This list was dumb the second you notice cloudy with a chance of meatballs is already in the top 50.
Holy Shit! I just noticed that Cloudy With a Fucking Chance of Meatballs is on this list. What…in…the…fuck??!? Who compiled this list, some 8 year old kid with Aspergers?
BANNER PIC:
Jesus, Kenneth Branagh’s Thor looks like its really gonna suck balls.
The list makes for an interesting read and i love that the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner movie is ranked so high, but not having The Jungle Book in the top 5 is a travesty. Great characters and great songs. I’ve tried to watch the much heralded Spirited Away on three separate occasions and it bores me stiff.
” tried to watch the much heralded Spirited Away on three separate occasions and it bores me stiff.”
that’s because you’re dead inside, charlie-san.
According to Gilliam, not only are Antz and A Bug’s Life the same movie, but so are Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly?
Man, that Donkey Hodey movie has really fucked with his head.
