[Anne looks around desperately as we hear Nazis knocking on walls and shouting in German in the floors below. They’re searching for false walls, trap doors, entrances to the Franks’ hideout.]
[Anne’s father sits off by himself, serenely smoking a cigarette.]
Anne’s mother: [loud whisper] “Put it out.” [she waves her hand at the smoke]
Anne’s father: [keeps smoking] “What kind of man can’t provide for his family.”
Anne’s mother: “We have food. We have a roof, a room. Put it out.”
Anne’s father: “Charity. I got that from a guy on the street. Only kind of man can’t keep his family safe is not a man.”
[Sound of the front door as the Nazis leave. Everyone looks relieved, except the father, who looks disappointed.]
[The trap door opens, and Jurgen, the father of the household below, enters.]
Jurgen: “You gotta get.”
[They look to Anne’s father, but he looks away.]
Anne’s mother: “They’ll send us to the camps.”
Jurgen: “You’ll go to the camps either way. You stay here, the butchers will turn us into mutton cutlets bleeding on wax paper. You gotta get.”
[offscreen] Anne: “Make a play.”
[Everyone looks at Anne. She removes her shirt. Nobody moves. Jurgen stares at her for a beat.]
Jurgen: “Put it on a bus.”
Anne: “Wait.”
Jurgen: “On a bus.”
[He closes the trap door and goes back downstairs.]
