The movie is based on the short story Button, Button written by Richard Mathesson some time ago. In the short story at least there’s none of this bizarre, conspiracy-esque, action going on. It’s a very simple story written as commentary on human nature, ethics, and morals. I’m upset to see that it looks like once again hollywood has distorted it beyond all recognition of it’s former self. To ruin it for all of you in the short story pressing the button will get you the money, and the man gives the box to another person “whom you do not know” implying that it will kill them if they press the button. It doesn’t look like the movie’s going in that direction though.

This worked fine as a 30min Twilight Zone ep, but stretching it out to 1.5 – 2 hrs? I didn’t think about this story and mutter ‘Needs more gigantic leering rabbit.’

This movie was based on the same short story (“Button, Button”) that the Twilight Zone episode was based on, which means this arbitrary morality play was sold at least two times too many.
