07.29.09 CAMERON DIAZ’ BOX HAS A BIG RED BUTTON
This is the trailer for The Box, from Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly, who hopes to rebound from the commercial failure of Southland Tales. It stars James Marsden, Frank Langella, and Cameron Diaz, who may have given away a big plot secret at Comic Con (go ahead, I know you’re thinking it, “Cameron Diaz reveals the mysteries of her box all too easily.”). Suffice to say, the plot involves a stranger, Langella (ella ella, eh eh eh…), showing up to struggling couple Diaz and Marsden’s house with a box and a proposition: press the button on the box and get a million dollars cash, but someone somewhere in the world who you don’t know will die.
I realize I’m not the best audience for this “dilemma”, especially not today when I’ve spent at least three hours alternately getting screwed by NYC public transportation, searching for a wireless connection, and getting caught in a downpour with my laptop. A million dollars for killing a stranger? Pff, I’d kick a baby into traffic on the off chance it’d make me feel better. Just give me a reason, junior.

Um, why don’t they beat Langella to death with that box and keep that briefcase full of cash he brought into their kitchen? Sure, you’re still a murderer, but at least you get to pick who bites it (and it’s the creepy a-hole who’s messing with you). Also, why don’t they ever just wish that the monkey’s paw / evil genie / etc. never existed in the first place? And who gives a shit if they ever get off the island?
I’m not the audience for movies like this, am I?
I died when I pushed Submit comment red box
Plot sounds familiar, no?

Huh, usually when I punch the box it’s the other way around. I end up poorer and only one out of millions will have a chance at surviving, and that’s only if the condom breaks.
Her box has a red button?
She should have that Valtrex’d.
Yeah, ualma, but that button is black and they’re talking in a different ridiculous accent.
I’d just hold a ransom. Everybody give me a dollar or I’ll press the button.
Then, after collecting, I’d press the button anyway.
I’ve always found that if the button on your box is red, you’re probably pushing it too much.
Ren and Stimpy did it
I liked Southland Tales, but i hadn’t done acid in 18 years until the night i watched it either.
Langella pushed Whoopi’s button. I would need more than a mil for that.
The plot is a ripoff of a twilight zone episode

And I’m with you on the moral dilemma here, chief. I’d be all, how much I get for killing a parent?
I pressed the red button on a box once and it squirted me in the face.
This plot is a ripoff of the time Jack in the Box killed a dude.
If you push the button on my box probably, you’ll get a million hollers.
WOOO!!!
This movie was based on the same short story (”Button, Button”) that the Twilight Zone episode was based on, which means this arbitrary morality play was sold at least two times too many.
This worked fine as a 30min Twilight Zone ep, but stretching it out to 1.5 – 2 hrs? I didn’t think about this story and mutter ‘Needs more gigantic leering rabbit.’
So this is like Click for really old people, right?
If given the same offer, I’d slap that button so fast I’d blow my scapula out my neck.
press the button on the box and get a million dollars cash, but someone somewhere in the world who you don’t know will die.
Shiiiiiit, I’d kill for the Nobel Peace Prize.
I’d settle for a box with a button that dunked a clown every time I pressed it.
Brad Pitt: What’s on the box?! WHAT”S ON THE BAAAAAHHXXX?!!?!?!
Morgan Freeman: A red button. Chill the fuck out, man.
If it would kill the driver in front of me, I would want one of those boxes for my dashboard.
She hasn’t aged well, has she?
The movie is based on the short story Button, Button written by Richard Mathesson some time ago. In the short story at least there’s none of this bizarre, conspiracy-esque, action going on. It’s a very simple story written as commentary on human nature, ethics, and morals. I’m upset to see that it looks like once again hollywood has distorted it beyond all recognition of it’s former self. To ruin it for all of you in the short story pressing the button will get you the money, and the man gives the box to another person “whom you do not know” implying that it will kill them if they press the button. It doesn’t look like the movie’s going in that direction though.
