MARTIN SCORSESE DIRECTS ROLLING STONES

03.31.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Shine a Light is Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones concert documentary.  It opens April 4th on regular and IMAX screens.

What I’m most impressed with is the CGI work.  The band looks almost lifelke.

UPDATE: I’m told Keith’s face was actually created using a combination of CGI and animatronics.

WORST. PROTEST. EVER.

03.31.08 Written by Vince Mancini

Nice ink, bro. Though the Jabba tat is a little redundant.

With Iraq descending into sectarian violence and China cracking down hard on protests in Tibet, some Star Wars fans decided it was high time to organize a protest…  demanding the release of the Fanboys movie.

"Star Wars" fans attempted to hold protests in support of Kyle Newman’s unreleased "Fanboys" movie at Friday’s screenings of the Weinstein Co.’s "Superhero Movie" on both coasts, but whether any substantial protest occurred is a subject of debate.

A "Star Wars" fan group known as the 501st called for fellow fans to show up at the AMC Theatres in New York and Los Angeles. The 501st claims 14 members showed up in New York and, when confronted by two security guards, chose to go inside and pay to see "21" instead. But an AMC spokesperson said there was no protest, and a source close to the film cited a YouTube video posted Friday night showing one protester saying no one else was there.

The group also claimed that more than 20 showed up at AMC’s theaters in Century City and faced even more security guards who asked them to leave the mall, which was considered private property. An AMC rep said the protest was limited to one person in a Darth Vader costume on the street outside the theater. A source close to the film said eight protesters did appear, and were taken out for pizza by one of the filmmakers.

"We’ve been working on this movie for many years, and if someone is going to take time out of their personal life and support our film, whatever that support might be, at the very least what we can do is say thank you and buy them a couple of slices of pizza for caring abut this project as much as we do," "Fanboys" producer Matthew Perniciaro said.

Say it ain’t so, fellas!  Tell me you at least held out for an extra side of ranch!

"They seemed to take the term ‘phantom menace’ to a whole different level. I guess they weren’t that organized. Apparently getting ‘Star Wars’ fans to give up their Friday night isn’t as easy as it looks," one source said. [Hollywood Reporter]

And that source was Shecky Goldfarb, whose comments were punctuated by a sad trombone sound.

NEW INDIANA JONES TV SPOT

03.31.08 Written by Vince Mancini

In this new TV spot for Indiana Jones and the Pants Up to His Nipples or whatever it’s called, Indy fights Russkies, runs from injuns, and cracks his bullwhip like it’s 1985. You know, for an archaeology professor he sure spends a lot of time destroying ancient ruins.

He’s really more like a professor of letting the bodies hit the floor (I hear ASU has a great program).

BRUNO PUNKS BEN AFFLECK, BLACK FOLKS

03.31.08 Written by Vince Mancini

FilmDrunk was the first to report (as far as I know) that a handful of news reports about a “German” film crew causing trouble in Kansas sounded unmistakably Brüno (Sacha Baron Cohen’s third alter ego after Ali G and Borat).

Now the above video from the Wichita airport incident has hit the web.  Many sources are also reporting that the official title of the movie is Brüno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt, but I’m not sure where they’re getting their information.  The IMDB page still just says Brüno, and the long title sounds straightforward, rather than satirical – like someone explaining Brüno, not Brüno himself.  The writer of this title would’ve called the Borat movie Borat: A British Jew Tours America Pretending to be an Anti-Semitic Kazakh with a Fat Guy and a Bear.

In related news, Mike Walker of the National Enquirer, during his weekly segment on Howard Stern on Friday, told a story about Ben Affleck calling his friend Sarah Silverman following an interview with a “very famous openly gay fashion journalist”, that he called “the weirdest sit-down he had ever had.”  He said that the interviewer’s first question had been “How do you like nig**rs?”  Of course, Silverman’s immediate reaction was, “Uh, was the guy’s name Brüno?” at which point Affleck realized it had been a gag.

But keep in mind that this was a Mike Walker story.  Anyone who’s ever heard his segment on Stern knows he reports, almost exclusively, fishy-sounding celebrity gossip that’s never reported anywhere else.  Also, you figure that if Brüno wanted an honest answer to his question, he would’ve asked Dog the Bounty Hunter.

NIC CAGE IS A HITMAN WITH A HEART

03.31.08 Written by Vince Mancini

This the trailer for Bangkok Dangerous, a Pang Brothers-directed remake of their own über popular Hong Kong flick. Nic Cage plays a hitman who goes to Thailand on business and ends up growing a conscience.

His character was a deaf-mute in the original, but they took that part out because Nic Cage’s face doesn’t move anymore.  Having him tell a story solely through expressions would’ve required a much larger CGI budget (or a forehead double).  I think a better solution would’ve been for him to wear the bear suit the whole movie.  And instead of falling in love, he could just punch chicks.

Also, I can’t believe they’re making an action movie set in Thailand without Tony Jaa.  Tony Jaa and Nic Cage in a bearsuit?  Talk about the ultimate buddy action flick!  GRR, NOBODY PUTS BABY ELEPHANT IN THE CORNER!
