Ever since the movie adaptation of Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk’s first novel, became a worldwide phenomenon, people have been clamoring for more. Well good news, because adaptations of Choke and Survivor, his second and third best books, in my opinion, are back on.
Survivor, which was originally shelved because of similarities between the story and September 11th (it begins with the protagonist crashing a hijacked airliner), now has I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence back on the project. Meanwhile Choke is premiering at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival (that’s a first look you see on the left).
In Clark Gregg’s directorial debut, Sam Rockwell plays Victor Mancini, who grew up going from one foster home to another after Victor’s mother (played by Angelica Huston) was found to be an unfit mother. Several times throughout his childhood his mother would kidnap him from his foster parents. But they would eventually be caught.
Choke is so named for the protagonist’s habit of going into restaurants and pretendng to choke, then bilking money from the good semaritan who gives him the heimlich. Sam Rockwell is perfect casting. Hehe, ROCKwell, get it?
Everyone knows about Fight Club, and everyone has seen David Fincher’s film adaptation, but what you probably don’t know is that Palahniuk wrote a book called Survivor that is arguably better than Fight Club. [/film]
I would disagree wholeheartedly, but in any case:
Survivor is a novel by Chuck Palahniuk. A satire of commercial culture, it is the story of Tender Branson, a member of the Creedish Church, a death cult. In it, every member learns how to be a servant for the human race—most of them are butlers and maids—and fear most human pleasures. They await a sign from God to tell them to deliver themselves unto Him, that is, commit suicide. [Wiki]
I’ve read all of these, and they’re pretty compelling reads, but all Chuck P’s ("Palahniuk"? Dude, if anyone needs a pen name it’s him…) books seem to have the same flaw: they start like Fight Club, with a tight-knit subculture, but before long it becomes a world-wide phenomenon. To me, the small, nihilistic communities always resonate, but the worldwide rebellions don’t – the characters in Fight Club go for escapism precisely because they have no faith in being able to change the world. Choke and Survivor are similar.
But anyway, like Fight Club, most of his disappointing endings are more than made up for by their strange characters and compelling first 3/4ths, and at the very least, they’re all much better ideas for movies than a motherfucking Thomas Kinkade painting.

I love me some Chuck. Yay. Quite good news on this bleak day…
PS: It’s bleak because I’m trying not to get fired before I can quit. But I can’t do that until Thursday so I have to get through 3 days without losing it completely…
Lance reads alot of books for a movie blogger. He should take a cue from my kiddo. When it was time to read another chapter from Stuart Little(fucked up bookBTW) he asked, "can’t we just watch the movie?"
Wait, wait, wait…. what’s Fight Club?
Lance, that was the most insightful and well-written post you have ever dropped on this site. I’m not sure if you were trying to be funny but it was really well written.
Am I gay if I want to blow you now? Because I don’t. I was just asking.
GRRRR…..Literature!
Out of character/actually trying to be serious: I haven’t read any of these books. I am incredibly picky when it comes to books and like probably less than 1% of the books available to me to read.
However, I did like Fight Club, should I bother checking out the book? I normally like "quick reads", but I make exceptions for books that hold your attention. (Keep in mind, too, I consider up to 400 pages a "quick read".)
McRugger . . . we can’t talk about it.
The last non-michael moore book I read was Animal Farm. Good, quick read.
the chick bending over backwards with her mouth wide open in the american apparel hoodie ad . . . i’d do her so wrong it’s not funny.
Fek: Most of Chuck P’s books are pretty short. So you should be good to go.
I was going to wait until COtWs to reveal my new persona, but you guys are talking about books… Diary was good. Fight Club was better. Michael Moore’s books aren’t as good as Lies and the Lying Liars that Tell them and The Truth with Jokes.
Also, Assassination Vacation was fantastic
LOL, the bulk of my reading is Lord of the Rings, Drizzt, Conan, Elric/Moorcock, Ravenloft, etc. However, I have weird books I love like Animal Farm, War of the Worlds, and Soup On Wheels….guy’Cha!
PS: Never read a Harry Potter book. I can at least say that for myself.
bryce-cool, I will just add them to my Amazon Xmas wish list. :D
That rules, a lot. I thought Lullaby was his best, personally. But that’s mostly because I love necrophilia.
Some of his female fans found him on a millionaire&celebs dating club MeetRich.com. He has a personal account there with his handsome pictures, blog and something about his films, albums…In his friend circle, some other stars can be found there.
I wonder when they’ll make a movie version of Maniac McGee. Soup on Wheels? I liked Soup on Fire more.
Yeah I liked the idea behind Lullaby, it was pretty dark. And you know, dead babies are always a plus…
The plot for Choke reminds me of a very weird movie I watched late one night on IFC, called The Heart is Deceitful Above all Things..
Anyone had the pleasure of being disturbed by that movie? It’s one of those that while I sat watching I kept thinking, "this shit is going to give me nighmares".
And it did.
Choke is actually in post-production. I saw a screening of it in Hollywood a couple months back. Very early rough cut but it was looking good. Very funny.
Indeed, FC has the most bullshit ending of all time. How the fuck do you cure schizophrenia by shooting yourself in the neck?
Whatever though, that scene where Pitt lets the bar owner beat the shit out of him, and returns with his crazy blood-spewing shannigans, were awesome.
I love your avatar linc.
Uncle Remus!!! right?
You guys just ignored my big reveal. Jesus, I feel like the ending of The Village now.
I think it’s great AGB. Although I liked you just the way you were.
Thanks bryce. That’s almost as good as "You make me want to be a better man" and "You had me at hello"
grrr… chick flicks
you have to wonder if the lodged anal beads causing an impacted bowel throughout the entirety of Choke will make an appearance in the film. if i recall they’re pretty pivotal to the plot and end up with victor having an enormous mound of feces almost burst out of his gut.
just saying they can work miracles with movie makeup these days.
Your new persona completes me.
librARIAN NATION
Nom, don’t be sad. As I tell myself every COtW, winning isn’t everything.
That’s loser talk. librARIAN NATION!!! 4 Life!!
Change your name to it if you want. You sore loser.
Nah, I’ve got too much unwhite blood. Maybe I’ll change it to "Dewey Decimator" or something.
I just finished Haunted last night, and just for the ‘jeeeeesus Chuck’ factor went back and reread the short Guts. Probably made me more uncomfortable than anything I’ve ever read… well, except the bible after I grew up on got educated. You people beleeeeeve this shit…
Nominus:
Maniac McGee has been made already. It aired on Nickelodeon a lot when I was a kid.
Well it came out it 2003, so by "kid" I meant 15. Forgive me.
[www.imdb.com];
Survivor was fucking bad ass. It should be made today and every cheesedick celebrity should be hit over the head with it.
I’ve gotta say "Choke" is by far my favorite Palahniuk book. I read it three times.
The "simulated rape" scene with that weird chick is gold. I’d jizz all over her walls for sure!
YES!!!! CHUCK P gives me a hard on!!! err….grrrrrrr LITERARY MASTERPIECES!!! they should make ‘rant’ into a movie, now that would be awesome.
Choke is my favourite book, also.
I’d totally give it to Sam Rock, too, but only with my eyes shut, and thinking about Bryce’s Grandmother. I’m not a homo.
Word.
I really don’t have a favorite Chuck P. book as i like them all, even "Diary". There’s just something so fucked up that happens in each one of them that reminds me of my childhood. You know?
They should be doing an "invisible monsters" movie first. Better book and screen adaptability than Choke and Survivor.
they start like Fight Club, with a tight-knit subculture, but before long it becomes a world-wide phenomenon. To me, the small, nihilistic communities always resonate, but the worldwide rebellions don’t
Lance, have you read Diary yet? You should.
I’ve heard that. It’s one of the few of his I haven’t read.
I think it’s his best, but I may be biased because he’s the least self-loathing about his homosexuality in this one, the cultishness doesn’t go unrealistically global, it’s filled with interesting trivia, and because the heroine is a painter (I worked as a painter for awhile, and now I destroy my paintings instead, which is more rewarding than dealing with art buyers). Some fuckin’ quotes (with no spoilers) from the book:
"What they don’t teach you in art school is never, ever tell people you wanted to be an artist. Just so you know, for the rest of you life, people will torture you by saying how you used to love to draw when you were young. You used to love to paint."
(continued)
"This was Peter’s theory of self-expression. The paradox of being a professional artist. How we spend our lives trying to express ourselves will, but we have nothing to tell. We want creativity to be a system of cause and effect. results. Marketable product. We want dedication and discipline to equal recognition and reward. We get on our art school treadmill, our graduate program for a master’s in fine arts, and practice, practice, practice. With all our excellent skills, we have nothing special to document. According to Peter, nothing pisses us off more than when some strung-out drug addict, lazy bum, or a slobbering pervert creates a masterpiece. As if by accident. Some idiot who’s not afraid to say what they really love."
"He smiled Peter’s same half smile, the look of somebody laughing over the fact he had cancer. The look of someone facing a firing squad of clowns with real guns."
And after you read Diary, maybe pick up Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.
Uncle Remus is owned and happy to be! Isa be a har’ workin’ mon fo the massah!
Yea, Lance, "Rant" doesn’t go all global either I think youd probably hate that one, so you should definitely out.
Dude, dub, was that English? Is there a word missing in there or something?
the only Chuck P I’ve read is "Invisible Monsters". I dug it, but I think I’d have to go back on my meds before I attempted any more Chuck P
i’m sorry lance, i’m downing some wine coolers like a fuckn champion over here, bro. i meant to say, "so you should definitely check it out."
pretty badass- invisible monsters is pretty fuckn wack (imo), but if you enjoyed that you should definitely check out some of his other books eg. rant, survivor, choke, fight club, diary, etc… personally my favorite is fight club, then again not everyone’s life was changed by it.
I really enjoyed Survivor, but I think Fincher is the only person that can do it justice. The man knows how Palahniuk works. Fight Club is a great book, and the film is just as fantastic simply because Fincher knows how to make someone visualize a story. Yes, it does have a great cast (Meat Loaf anyone?), but there is no denying the team of Palahniuk/Fincher.
I’d also love to see Brad Pitt with the Branson haircut.
Drew Carey’s brother FTW.
The Mighty Fek’lhr wonders if Drew is related to Mariah? She cuts a pretty mean radium chloride, yessirree!
